Medieval Ceramic Tile Handbuilding Workshop

This workshop will take you through all the steps to create your own medieval-style inlay tiles.

2.5 hours

Class size 1 to 6 (public classes), 6 to 10
£60 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Important venue update: From May onwards, all workshops will take place at our new studio at 377 Station Road, Forest Gate. If you are booking a class scheduled after May, please note the new location when planning your visit.
Looking to expand your hand-building knowledge? This workshop will take you through all the steps to create your own medieval-style inlay tiles.
You will be guided through:
  • The traditional methods used, and the history of this technique which was lost for hundreds of years.
  • The different states of clay needed to achieve your design
  • Deciding the shape of your tiles
  • Carving out your own design
  • Filling in the design with slip clay and cleaning away the surface to reveal your tile!
The Workshop will last 2.5 hours, and you will be required to return to the studio at a later date (approx. 3-4 weeks) to collect your tiles once they've been fired in the kiln. Postage is available at extra cost.
The group will be limited to six people.
Please note: We strive to help you create something amazing during your pottery class. Because each piece is handmade and involves many variables (such as clay handling, glaze, and firing conditions), we’re unable to offer refunds or replacements for defects or damages that occur in items you’ve made.
What you'll get
You can expect to leave with 1-5 tiles 10cm x 10cm depending on the level of detail you wish to achieve in each one. Sizing of tiles is variable dependant on your designs.
