Important venue update: All workshops will take place at our new studio at 377 Station Road, Forest Gate.
Looking to expand your hand-building knowledge? This workshop will take you through all the steps to create your own medieval-style inlay tiles.
You will be guided through:
  • The traditional methods used, and the history of this technique which was lost for hundreds of years.
  • The two styles of medieval tile, inlay and sgraffito
  • The different states of clay needed to achieve your design
  • Deciding the shape of your tiles
  • Carving out your own design
  • Filling in the design with slip clay and cleaning away the surface to reveal your tile!
The Workshop will last 2.5 hours, and you will be required to return to the studio 6 weeks later to collect your tiles once they've been fired in the kiln. Postage is available at extra cost.
Please note: We strive to help you create something amazing during your pottery class. Because each piece is handmade and involves many variables (such as clay handling, glaze, and firing conditions), we’re unable to offer refunds or replacements for defects or damages that occur in items you’ve made.

  • 5/5 from Katie Slee, attended Sep 2026: We loved our class with Martha! From the bard-core playlist, to her opening introduction to medieval ceramics, we felt transported to a different place and time where we could get our hands dirty and just make. Martha was super generous with the clay - I have sorted a bunch of Christmas presents and it’s only September. Would highly recommend!
  • 5/5 from Gavin Haughton, attended Aug 2026: Great fun, lots of information on the history of tile making with guidebooks and templates to help create your tile. Plenty of time and clay allow you to experiment with making several tiles so you get a good practical understanding of the art.
  • 5/5 from Fergus Murray, attended Aug 2026: Martha was great! A very enjoyable afternoon, the class was generous with materials and we had a lot of fun.
  • 5/5 from Catherine Beaumont, attended Aug 2026: This was a very enjoyable class. Very relaxed and felt very mindful. Martha started by going over the background of medieval tile design and then demonstrated how to prepare our own. Have left tiles to be fired for a few weeks so will see what the final product then. Definitely recommend this class and teacher.

  • 5/5 from Hilary Spencer, attended Jul 2026: Excellent worshop - well run, and a good balance of historical background and practical tips. Although I super over-prepared and brought my own references, that was unecessay as they had the same and better books for inspiration. Little details, like 3D printed stamps (10-footed bats, dragons, etc) or the medieval-style playlist made it very enjoyable. Thanks again to Roots and Shoots, and I guess I'll see how the tiles turned out :)

  • 5/5 from Lottie, attended Feb 2026: This is my second time coming back for a workshop, I loved the first one I went to (Delftware Plate Making) so much that I went to solo, that I bought a group of friends for a medieval tile workshop for my birthday, we had the worlds best time. It's a lovely, relaxing but fun and informative workshop where I learned new techniques (I have never made earthenware) as an amateur person who loves working with clay. Sorrel is a brilliant teacher who let us be super creative with the brief, whilst also showing us some of the techniques that the class takes from Medieval ceramics/practice. I will be back, thanks so much again for such a lovely time, we can't wait to see our finished tiles!

  • 5/5 from Caitlin Abley, attended Nov 2025: I could not recommend this class more highly! The workshop is run by Sorrel, who is an excellent teacher. She created a relaxed atmosphere where we all felt comfortable to experiment and have fun with our creations. She took us through both the practicalities and history of medieval tile making and then gave us ample time to work on our tiles. The class works for total beginners and the more artistically-inclined as you can be as ambitious as you want. I can't wait to go back for the medieval face jug workshop - I'm hooked!

We were shown the techniques and then we got to create for ourselves with the support of Sorrel. She was very knowledgeable on the topic and gave us excellent inspiration from her books and history. We are all very excited to see our finished pieces once they come out of the kiln!
  • 5/5 from Christopher Duffy, attended Sep 2025: This class was extremely good. The teacher was knowledgable, approachable and really helpful. The mood in the class was relaxed and everyone seemed to enjoy chatting and helping each other. The teacher was always there to offer encouragement, advice and ideas for designs. She's clearly not only an expert in ceramics but also in teaching and medieval art and desin. By far, this has been the best such crafting class I have attended. I can't recommend it enough.
