This pre-recorded video workshop takes you step by step through the process of how to make a wet-felted hot water bottle cover. Perfect to make for yourself or a handmade gift!

Your supportive guide, Heather, speaks slowly and uses a selection of camera views to allow you to clearly see what she is doing. It includes tips and hacks to help you on your way to completing the project.

The video comes in two parts - the first takes you through drawing and laying out the fibres up to decorating. The second takes you through removing the resist, and finishing the fulling/shrinking the cover to fit your hot water bottle.

How long will it take you? To a larger extent, this will depend on a) how quickly you draw and lay out your fibres and b) how quickly you full and shrink the fibres. Four hours is a guide.

Please note: If you're new to wet felting I very much recommend you make one of my felted planters first. This will equip you with the skills needed to successfully make this much larger wet felting project.

Knowledge required
Intermediate - anybody who already has experience of wet felting and in particular has made a 3D planter.

What to bring
  • Sufficient wool tops to lay out and decorate your hot water bottle cover. I used approximately 150gms.
  • Hot water bottle - if you want your cover to fit well have one to hand from the start.
  • Sharp embroidery or textile scissors. If you don’t own any nail scissors make a good stand-in.
  • A sturdy cardboard tube (tape over any sticky areas). I find the best is from tin foil or cling film. If you haven’t got one ready for recycling pop an unfinished roll inside a carrier bag and seal it.
  • A plant mister, repurposed spray bottle full of warm water with a squirt of washing-up liquid in it (I use Ecover). Or a kitchen/bathroom sponge (what I use for this particular project) or a plastic carrier bag/large food bag and a bowl of warm water.
  • A couple of tea towels or hand towels or old t-shirts.
  • A work area (approximately 1m2) that you’re not bothered about getting a bit wet (or cut open a bin liner and work on top of that).
  • Access to a kitchen-sized sink.
