Stop relying on downloaded patterns that don't quite work, and learn how to develop your own simple leather patterns from scratch at this leatherworking class in Woolwich.
This beginner-friendly course gives you a clear, structured understanding of leather pattern making specifically for saddle stitching. You'll explore how to translate three-dimensional ideas into accurate, buildable flat patterns that account for the realities of leather thickness and stitch spacing, and learn what makes a well-constructed leather goods template, how to identify and apply the right technical information to it, and how thoughtful pattern design can improve both your stitching and your finished look.
You'll come away understanding why the pattern decisions made early on determine whether a piece holds its shape or falls apart in construction. Working through practical principles and real construction logic, you'll build the confidence and precision to create simple leather goods templates independently, along with a deeper understanding of how handmade leatherwork is truly put together. No previous experience in saddle stitching is needed, though the course is equally suited to those who already have some experience working with leather.
Best for:
  • Leatherworkers who want to move beyond copying templates and start designing their own patterns
  • Makers who already practise saddle stitching and want to improve the quality of their templates
  • Beginners who want to learn the structural principles of leather pattern making from the start
  • Crafters who struggle with patterns that don't translate well into real stitched objects
  • Makers after better symmetry, more accurate construction and better-fitting results
Please note: private classes are available on request, priced differently and run to a different duration from our scheduled group classes. Please get in touch for a private class quotation.

We founded The London Leather Workshop in 2012, bringing together our backgrounds in fashion, accessories and leather goods as Italian design graduates. Over the years, our passion for making grew into a South East London studio where design, prototyping, product development and craftsmanship come together. Sara leads the teaching, drawing on specialist training in fashion and bag making in Rome, Milan and Florence, while Melissa brings deep experience in sourcing, materials and studio operations.
What we love most about teaching is helping people discover that leathercraft is something they can genuinely learn and enjoy with the right guidance. Our workshops are taught in small groups in a real working studio, so students receive individual attention, learn professional techniques and leave with a finished piece they can feel proud of.
Over the past ten years, we have taught students from around the world and shared our knowledge through workshops, one-to-one training and wider community work. We love creating a space that feels welcoming, practical and inspiring, whether someone joins as a complete beginner, a curious maker or an aspiring professional.
