Have you always wanted to learn to knit but never quite known where to start? Or perhaps someone showed you years ago, but it never really stuck?Over five relaxed, friendly sessions at Four Otter Craft Studio, we'll take you right from your first stitches to starting a simple knitting project for yourself. We've deliberately made this a five-week course because learning to knit takes practice. We don't want to rush you through a list of stitches, send you home with something you've copied from us, and leave you wondering what to do next.We want you to understand your knitting, build confidence with your needles, and leave feeling that you really can knit. What you'll learnWe'll start right at the beginning, learning how to cast on, make the knit stitch, and find a comfortable way of holding your yarn and needles. There's plenty of time to practise and get used to the movements before we add anything new.Over the five weeks, you'll learn knit and purl stitches and use them to explore different textures, including garter stitch, stocking stitch, rib, and moss stitch. You'll learn how to recognise the stitches you've made, count your stitches and rows, and begin to understand what your knitting is telling you. We'll also explore simple increases and decreases so you can see how knitting changes shape, and we'll look at some of the common things that go wrong — and what you can do about them. You'll learn how to finish your knitting, sew pieces together, weave in your ends, and understand the basics of tension and the language used in knitting patterns.Your first projectIn Week 4, you'll choose a small project you'd like to make from a selection of beginner-friendly Four Otter patterns and choose your yarn colour. Then Week 5 is where you put everything together.Rather than all following us step-by-step, you'll use the skills you've learned over the previous four weeks to start your chosen project from a simple written pattern, with us there to help when you need it.The aim isn't to turn you into an expert knitter in five weeks. It's to help you become a confident beginner who can pick up their needles, start knitting, and have a much better idea of what to do when something doesn't quite go to plan. We'll also help you think about what you'd like to make next, how to choose an appropriate pattern and yarn, and what you might want to learn next. After the courseLearning to knit doesn't end when the five weeks are over. We'll help you choose what you'd like to tackle next and, if you'd like continued support while you work on your own projects, you can join us at Textile School. We also run workshops where you can explore new knitting skills as your confidence grows.Come and learn to knit properly — with time to practise, make mistakes, ask questions, and discover just how much you can do with two needles and some yarn.
