Learn to Crochet – 5 Week Beginner Crochet Course

Hook, yarn, and a little guidance – that’s all you need.

5 x 2 hours Class size 1 to 8 guests       £199 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Have you always wanted to learn to crochet but never quite known where to start? Or perhaps you've tried before but couldn't quite get your hook, yarn, and hands to cooperate?
Over five relaxed, friendly sessions at Four Otter Craft Studio, we'll take you right from making your first chain to starting a simple crochet project for yourself.
We've deliberately made this a five-week course because learning to crochet takes practice. We don't want to rush you through a list of stitches, show you exactly where to put your hook every time, and then leave you wondering what to do when you're on your own.
Instead, you'll have time to practise, experiment, make mistakes, understand what your crochet is doing, and learn how different stitches and techniques can be used to make all sorts of things.
What you'll learn
We'll start right at the beginning, finding a comfortable way to hold your hook and yarn, making a slip knot and chain, and learning your first crochet stitches.
You'll learn how to work backwards and forwards in rows, make double and treble crochet stitches, recognise and count your stitches, and understand why your lovely straight piece of crochet has suddenly started getting wider – or narrower!
We'll explore how crochet changes shape by working in the round, increasing and decreasing, and you'll use those skills to make a simple crochet bowl. You'll also learn how to make a traditional granny square, work into spaces, create corners, and change colours.
Along the way, we'll look at finishing and joining, some of the common things that go wrong and how to put them right, and begin to make sense of crochet patterns and abbreviations – including the rather important difference between UK and US crochet terminology.
Your first project
During Week 4, you'll choose a small project you'd like to make and choose your yarn colour, ready for the final session.
Then in Week 5, you'll put everything you've learned together.
You'll choose from a selection of Four Otter projects such as a small amigurumi, crochet pocket, flower, or granny-square bag. Each project has been designed to use skills you've already learned during the course but combine them in a different way.
Rather than us taking everyone through the same project step by step, you'll start working from your own pattern, with us there to help when you need it.
You might suddenly realise that making a little bee is really just working in the round, increasing, crocheting for a while, and then decreasing again – and you already know how to do all of those things.
Your project doesn't have to be finished before the session ends. The important thing is that you know how to carry on when you get home.
In the final week, we'll also help you think about what you'd like to crochet next. We'll look at how to choose a suitable pattern, what yarn and hook it needs, and whether it uses techniques you already know or gives you something new to learn.
And if you'd like to carry on making your own projects with some help nearby, you can join us at Textile School or come back for one of our other crochet workshops as you develop your skills.
Come and learn to crochet with time to practise, experiment, ask questions, and discover what you can make with a hook and some yarn.
What you'll get
All the yarn and materials you'll use during the course are included, including the yarn and pattern for your final project.
Crochet hooks will be available to use during the sessions, and we'll advise you on what you'll need if you'd like to buy your own.
Tea, coffee, and the usual Four Otter encouragement are included too.
Knowledge required
This course is for complete beginners, including people who have never picked up a crochet hook before.
It's also suitable if you've tried crochet in the past but never got much further than making chains, or perhaps you can make a few stitches but aren't really sure what you're looking at or what to do next.
You don't need to know anything before you arrive. That's what the five weeks are for.
