7 x 20 mins label £45

Looking for a new DIY craft or hobby that you can enjoy at home? This online pottery course is a great way to begin your hand building journey!

During this beginner-friendly pottery course, you will be introduced to clay whilst you learn all of the foundational techniques of hand-building. You will learn the three main clay hand-building techniques – pinch pots, slab building and coiling.

Each video contains a step-by-step demonstration of making a clay creation using a particular technique. Along the way, there will also be hints, tips and explanations of how and why we do certain things when making. You also learn what you need to watch for and some of the ways to bring a make back when something goes wrong.

As this online pottery course is pre-recorded, you can enjoy it completely at your own pace – making it ideal for complete beginners. Pause and rewatch as much as necessary!

At the end of the course, you will have a newfound confidence in your pottery making abilities, ready to continue your hand-building journey at home!

Please note:

  • Each video is a different length depending on the topic covered but it is recommended that they are completed in order.
  • If you have any questions as you go through the videos you are welcome to contact the teacher for extra support.

What to bring
  • You will need your own clay and tools for this course. You can find much of the tools you need by repurposing items from home but if you would like to buy pottery tools I would suggest the following as a basic kit:
  • Wooden modelling tools.
  • A knife.
  • A paintbrush (around size 8).
  • A wooden rolling pin.
  • An untreated wooden board or piece of fabric to work on.
  • A sponge, a rubber kidney and a clay cutter are useful but not essential.
  • You can also add a whirler/turntable, texture/pattern stamps or rollers and a hole cutter too.

I passionately believe that everyone has the ability to be creative and love teaching because of this. I get a kick out of seeing students’ faces light up when they see a piece they made fresh from the kiln that they love, especially when they weren’t expecting it to work. I have heard too many people say, “I envy you. I’m just not creative.” including some students when they first arrive. Being creative doesn’t mean being good at art and craft. It’s soooo much broader than that (but I won’t go into that here!).

For myself I love trying new techniques and pushing clay to its limits. I often get asked, “how did you make that?” even by fellow ceramicists. The infinite possibilities of clay as a medium appeals to my need to constantly evolve my work and my love of learning and challenging myself. Teaching adds another layer to that.
