What you'll do
This day course is a skills improvement course and consists of soldering exercises to improve your understanding and undertaking of soldering tasks. Exercises will cover pallion, stick and sweat soldering.You will be practising various soldering techniques that you can apply to your jewellery making.The day will begin with an overview of soldering equipment and the tools needed, with a look at various pieces of additional equipment that can help aid soldering jobs. We will then progress to a number of soldering exercises that will be undertaken in copper and silver. Exercises will cover pallion, stick and sweat soldering with an exercise that will need students to have some scrap sterling silver sheet and/or wire with them.There will be lots of time during the masterclass to discuss tips and tricks to help with soldering, ask questions of the tutor and the day will finish with a look at samples of soldered work, both successful and unsuccessful to impart more information on how to improve your soldering going forward.You will be given handouts with this course, so you can go home and refer to them as you continue your soldering journey.Who is my instructor?Laila Smith has been making jewellery for over 25 years and she started her career on a Fellowship in the Jewellery Quarter, Birmingham. She has been teaching for two decades and has run her jewellery studio for a little longer.

Knowledge required
Basic soldering skills are required.
What to bring
- Reading glasses (if you need them!)
- Sterling silver scrap for making some earrings that you will be soldering silver posts onto. Ideally some sterling sheet (over 0.5mm thick) and some wire but anything you have will be useful.
- Clothes: Casual and not too precious as they may get a bit dusty or damaged. Avoid long, loose-fitting sleeves and anything that might catch or get caught while you are working.
- Shoes: Casual flat shoes and no open-toed sandals in case you drop a hammer or something hot on them!
- Hair: Tie long hair back.
