What you'll do

Whether you want to create unique gifts for the ladies in your life this Mother's Day or you're after a new hobby to let your creativity soar, this two-day sculpture course in London will see you getting hands-on experience working with Jesmonite — a uniquely versatile material.

Jesmonite can be used to replicate the appearance and texture of any surface finish, and even the finest of detail. It can mimic the appearance of materials such as stone, wood, leather and fabric. It is strong and durable, can be pigmented to any colour and used to create decorative surface effects.

It is often used as a lightweight alternative to stone and concrete, and has become an increasingly popular material widely used by artists, designers and prop-makers.

This two-day course will explore the different applications of Jesmonite under the tutelage of an experienced maker. Through a combination of live demonstrations and hands-on activities, you'll be constructing geometric and curved forms, creating decorative effects using pigment, and learning how to replicate other materials and textures using Jesmonite.

During the course you'll learn:
Day one

Introduction to the material, experimentation with mould making techniques using Polypropylene sheets that can be cut, scored and folded to make geometric and curved moulds relatively quickly that you will cast into.
You will learn how use Jesmonite pigments, create decorative effects such as Terrazzo and mar- bling, join objects together using Jesmonite and finishing processes.

Day 2
You will learn how to make a simple Silicone mould to mimic another material such as leather, fabric or wood and will learn how to laminate hollow castings with Jesmonite using Thixotrope and Quadaxial glass reinforcement.

You'll leave the class with a finished piece to keep forever or give as a one-of-a-kind gift, as well as the skills to continue casting to your heart's content. Whether you're making practical objects or expressive sculptures, you'll love discovering this fantastic material in a fun, relaxed environment.

Please note:

The cost of the course includes 1kg of jesmonite. Additional jesmonite is available to purchase on the day if required.
The stated class duration includes a one-hour break for lunch.

London Sculpture Workshop is an independent sculpture studio in Woolwich, South East London, located within Thames Side Studios, offering exceptional facilities for artists and those interested in making three-dimensional work.

Our short course programme covers a wide variety of technical and skill-based processes, taught by practising artists in superbly equipped workshops. We teach a range of skills including welding, casting, mould making, metal and woodwork, ceramics and hot metal practices.

London Sculpture Workshop is a not-for-profit, community interested company, established in 2012 by artists Giles Corby and Jessica Mello, trained at Royal College of Art and Slade. LSW has partnered with a number of prestigious organisations including; The British Museum, The Crafts Council, CRISIS, The Architecture Association and Oxford Brooke's University. In 2013 and 2014 LSW was awarded the Chelsea Arts Club Trust ‘Artist Run Space Award’ and awarded a grant for our work from the Mayor of London in 2016.

Teacher was friendly, knowledgeable, clear and helpful. I had less luck with my materials for the major piece. I hope I can glue it together. It might be good to move the life casting to the Saturday afternoon so the cast is more likely to dry out.
