2 x 7.5 hours Class size 1 to 4 guests       £175

Step into the timeless craft of stone carving and enjoy a hands-on creative experience working with natural limestone in London. This small, supportive workshop invites you to connect with traditional making techniques, and shape your own unique three-dimensional sculpture from raw stone.
No previous carving experience is required. With a maximum of four participants, you’ll receive plenty of individual guidance and support as you learn how to handle tools safely and confidently while developing your ideas and skills at your own pace.
What to expect:
  • Work with your own boulder of limestone.
  • Learn how to use traditional stone carving tools.
  • Guidance on blocking out, shaping, and refining your sculpture.
  • Small group teaching with plenty of one-to-one support.
  • Encouragement to explore and create your own three-dimensional design.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have created a unique stone sculpture and gained a deeper understanding of carving techniques. If you’re able to transport it, you’re welcome to take your finished piece home with you -- just be prepared, stone can be heavy!

  • 5/5 from Emily Igoe, attended Sep 2026: Super friendly with good tips and a nice studio to work in
  • 5/5 from Amanda Robinson, attended Jul 2026: Great atmosphere, excellent teaching, very enjoyable. If you’ve never sculpted stone it’s best to learn from people who are sculptors and even if you have some experience, it’s usual to return back to the same teachers. It’s a very pleasant space to learn the foundations of sculpture, with very good quality, positive, teaching. Sign up, try it, have a good weekend! Ps I’m still working on mine but I decided I wanted gargoyles and I have to use lighter tools due to a disability, alas my life will be blessed with dust for the foreseeable future! Photos are from day 1, the sculpture is more sculpted now!
  • 5/5 from Miruna Andreea Lazar, attended Jul 2026: Loved the course and cannot recommend it enough if you are curious about stone carving. You can see Amelia and Tristram's passion for the arts shine in their work and conversation. Some appreciation for BrâncuÈ™i might help you.
  • 5/5 from Marina Kerdemelidi, attended Jul 2026: My grandson and I had our first experience with carving the limestone and were very happy with our snake and elephant figures. The class is run in a green garden by two talented and very friendly masters, who showed us main techniques, helped with shaping our plans and ideas and showed how to see an image in just a piece of rock.

The purpose of the Garden Studio workshops is to invite people into my Garden Studio to share the skills that I have developed working in a wide range of materials as a designer and maker for 30 years in the theatre, creating sets, props, and puppets. Most of my work has involved making something that I have not made before, so there has been an element of learning in every project that I have done. I strongly believe in having a go, experimenting, and learning from your mistakes.
Over the past 20 years, I have run workshops in both 2D and 3D art forms for diverse groups, including BTEC and university students, older people, autistic groups, teenagers, and children, and approach teaching with a light touch and like to encourage people's latent creativity. I enjoy the practical aspect of showing people how to use tools and working with materials that they might not have worked with before.
In recent years, I have been developing my own work as an artist - in particular drawing, collage, and creating sculptures out of found wood and stone carving.
The classes will also be supported by my partner, who is a highly experienced sculptor who works in wax and clay and carves in stone, creating naturalistic and abstracted figures.
The workshops I run are a chance to take time out of the fast pace of modern life and allow yourself to develop the creativity which exists in us all. They are an opportunity to use your eyes, hands, and physically engage with the materials you are using in ways that are mindful, absorbing, and playful.
And in between moments of quiet concentrated activity, there will be chats and laughs and tea and lunch - an opportunity to get to know people in an unpressured way. And if the weather is nice, we can sit in the garden for tea!
