In this engaging workshop, you'll discover the art of contemporary hand weaving with artist Dalia James. You'll gain a fundamental grounding in tapestry weaving techniques and create your very own unique tapestry to take home and proudly display.
Throughout this hands-on activity, you'll learn:
  • Essential techniques such as plain weave, dovetailing, hatching, Rya knotting and free weaving.
  • How to warp a frame loom.
  • How to start forming design ideas through creative sketchbooking.
  • How to create a simple tapestry design
  • How to finish and display your tapestry.
Don't worry if you're new to weaving - this workshop is designed for beginners and experienced crafters alike. You'll start by exploring creative sketchbook work to develop a simple design, then learn how to plan and bring your vision to life on the loom.
As you weave, you'll be encouraged to experiment with colour and geometry, key themes in Dalia's work. You'll also explore texture through alternative materials, adding depth and interest to your piece. The process is relaxing and meditative, allowing you to express your creativity in a new and exciting medium.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have mastered the basics of tapestry weaving and learned how to design, finish and display a piece. This immersive experience will leave you with a newfound appreciation for the craft and a beautiful, handmade tapestry sampler and a piece you have deisgned yourself to cherish. You'll come away feeling inspired and accomplished, ready to continue your weaving journey at home.
What you'll get
The session will include everything you need: a tapestry frame loom, tools, sketchbooks, stationery, hand-dyed yarns, and alternative materials such as straw, paper, and bark. Each participant will leave the session with a mini tapestry and a sketchbook of ideas.

Dalia James is a London based hand-weaver. She graduated from Loughborough University with a degree in Woven Textile Design in 2012. As a handweaver, the connection between her and the cloth she creates is essential to her practice. Dalia’s work focuses on colour and geometry and explores the relationship between the two. Her artistic philosophy has been shaped by the writing’s of William Morris and Josef Albers and her work often references early 20th Century design and artistic movements.
