Cyanotypes: Background

Cyanotypes: Background

You'll start by getting settled into the space and the studio, and learn about the fascinating origins of this creative and flexible printing technique.

Paper Coating

Paper Coating

After some practice and demonstration you'll prepare for printing by mixing your Cyanotype solution and painting it onto paper.

Creating our Artwork

Creating Our Artwork

During the main part of the session, you will create the images that you would like to make prints from. After making paint using binder and pigment, you will use drawing, painting, collage, or a combination to create your final design.

Exposure and Developing

Exposure and Developing

After a break for lunch, you'll use the light box to expose your prints and use water to wash and reveal your finished print. I'll provide you with some blotting paper and packaging, so that you can take them and complete their drying at home!

During this in-depth printmaking workshop, we will learn how to make cyanotype prints in my home studio in Camberwell. I've practised and taught many artistic techniques professionally -- out of all of them, I think cyanotyping is one of the most fun, accessible, and enjoyable.
It can be done in a very controlled environment (as we will do in the studio) or much more simply, with sunlight. Either way, the chemical processes involved create an incredibly intense blue which is so beautiful!
Please note
  • This course is taught in my home studio, which is accessed via a steep loft staircase.
  • If you have difficulty using stairs, I’d recommend you don’t book this session, but please contact me as I will be organising dates for more accessible workshops in an alternative location.
  • We also have a cat, so this course may not be suitable if you have severe allergies.
Take home your own set of unique cyanotype prints and blotting paper, plus a host of new skills to try out again.

  • 5/5 from Anna Faherty, attended Jul 2026: A great opportunity to learn the basics of cyanotype printing and create a bundle of pieces to take away! Tom is a clear, patient and encouraging tutor who has created a well-structured session in a clean and organised space. There was time for quick experiments to understand the process, before we focused on more planned out prints. With no prior experience of cyanotypes, I came away with enough knowledge to make my own prints at home (something I intend to do) and Tom kindly shared information about the papers, lights and chemicals he himself uses after the session. I was also inspired to try out new techniques (like collage) to create rich, textured prints that go beyond the classic blue/white look. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get to grips with this beautiful print process.
  • 5/5 from Alli Hill, attended Jul 2026: Absolutely loved this workshop! I had been curious about cyanotype for some time and even tried a little bit on my own- but after getting the space to play, along with Tom’s insightful encouragement, I feel so much more confident in exploring it more in the future. The space was super lovely, clearly dedicated to creativity (and cyanotype specifically!). We definitely had everything we needed to keep busy and try new things throughout the day. Tom has clearly spent a lifetime developing his own creative process, which was so inspiring to see. He organized the workshop to be informative and structured, yet with plenty of freedom to find our own process along the way. I highly recommend this workshop! Thanks Tom for a wonderful and fun Sunday! ️
  • 5/5 from Adrienne Sanders, attended Jul 2026: I had such a wonderful day at Tom's cyanotype printmaking workshop. It was one of those rare classes where you completely lose track of time. The space felt so welcoming and relaxed, and there was a real sense of encouragement to play, experiment and make something that felt your own. Tom has such a depth of knowledge, not just about the history of cyanotype, but about all the different ways you can approach it. I loved experimenting with everything from seaweed and plants to ink and paint, and discovering how different materials created completely different effects. I was amazed by how much we created over the day. I'm genuinely so happy with the pieces I came home with and can't wait to keep creating. I also really appreciated that Tom sent through resources afterwards so we could carry on exploring the process ourselves. It didn't feel like the end of a workshop, but the beginning of learning a new craft. Thank you for such a thoughtful, inspiring and generous day. I'd recommend this workshop to anyone.
  • 5/5 from Tom Painter, attended Jun 2026: An interesting and enjoyable workshop with a lovely instructor. I left with some great prints (if i say so myself!) and enough knowledge to start experimenting on my own.
  • 5/5 from Fash, attended Jun 2026: I joined the class because I had seen a work of art in cyanotype and fallen in love with it - so I wanted to learn the technique and try my hand at it. The course was excellent - well structured, instructive, inspiring and with everything provided. Tom is a brilliant teacher as well as a great artist. The course also opened my eyes to the immense possibilities that cyanotype provides for trying out and combining a variety of creative techniques. Aside from the course itself, the atmosphere was also brilliant. It was good to meet and get to know other people, see their approach and be inspired by them. Overall, a great course that I would recommend to anyone who wants to try out new creative approaches.
  • 5/5 from Alice Carrick-Smith, attended Jun 2026: Thank you for such a lovely workshop, Tom, a really great way to spend our Sunday. Tom's experience with printing and other mark-making is what really made this workshop stand out for me. it was wonderful to have a new insight into what cyanotyping can be and the possibilities and variabilities that there are within the medium. there was so much more to the workshop than making our own prints. we painted, drew, scratched, collaged to added our own visual touches to the prints and it added a real excitement to the process. Tom was also incredibly generous with his resources, with showing us his own work and sending lots of follow-up info after as well. i will definitely take a lot of his teachings with me when i try and make some of my own work in the future!
  • 5/5 from Emilia Lehvonen-Shawki, attended Jun 2026: Really wonderful workshop, lots of creative tips and knowledge gained, good vibes all around. Highly recommend.
  • 5/5 from Andrea Hart, attended Mar 2026: Really enjoyed this class with Tom who was a fantastic and informative host and teacher. I learnt so much about the cyanotype process and was really pleased with the results. Would highly recommend the class to anyone regardless of their artistic ability as Tom was brilliant in his creative suggestions and generous with his time, expertise and patience.
  • 5/5 from Sara Robbins, attended Mar 2026: Ditto to all of the reviews below, Tom is a brilliant teacher. I didn't come with any experience, or with any idea of what I wanted to create, and felt a little stuck when we started designing our own cyanotype print. Tom gave me just the right level of direction to spark my imagination, and the feedback I needed to ensure my print composition had some balance. I loved how much it absorbed me for the afternoon and would love to do it again. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Ibrahim Serra-Mohammed, attended Mar 2026: Tom's Cyanotype class was really brilliant. A wonderful balance of informative printmaking history and guided practical cyanotype printing. Lots of opertunity to get creative and try lots of different teqniques with a wide selection of materials supplied from Tom's amazing loft art studio. We were kept in perfect homeostasis with delicious bisquits, great conversations and lots of tea :-) Highly recommend!!!!
  • 5/5 from Nipa Pc, attended Feb 2026: The teacher Tom was lovely and approachable and explained everything really clearly throughout the session. It was so much fun understanding the process and seeing the colours change after washing the paper! Nice small group. Great day overall - would recommend :)
  • 5/5 from Oli Woods, attended Feb 2026: Tom is the man! whether you're artistically inclined or not, you'll leave this workshop with some newsskills and some cool prints to show off. I can't recommend enough!
  • 5/5 from Tim Mosley, attended Feb 2026: As a complete novice to printmaking of any kind and having a visual impairment, I apprached the workshop with a sense of tepidation which Tom instantly abated via his warm and welcoming attidue and accesable, open and fun approach to the day. Creating a balance of history and information of the process with the practical aspect of the workshop, the small group of attendees with hugely different levels of experience and skill all were able to work happily alongisde eachother to create thier pieces of art that everyone seemed delighted with. Tom is interested, konwledgable and highly skilled and delivered an outstanding workshop.

I'm a British painter and printmaker based in South London who studied at The London College of Communication (UAL) and began my creative career in illustration before expanding into printmaking, painting and sculpture.
Alongside making my screenprint and cyanotype editions, I have illustrated book covers, been commissioned to create artworks for the Royal Maritime Museum, and designed large-scale permanent sculptures. I also teach in schools across London and really enjoy sharing my practice as well as learning from others!
If you are interested in the process of creating a cyanotype, this day-course combines some of the most enjoyable hands-on processes to create one from start to finish. Although this wonderful technique is one earliest photographic types of printing, we will be making our images through painting, drawing, and collage, in ways I have developed over the past 6 years. I've created this course because it is a fascinating and rewarding process, and an opportunity to learn, and to spend a relaxed day being creative.
