Join foraging enthusiast Adi at this foraging class in West Sussex, to share in his extensive experience and immerse yourself in a beautiful forest.
These walks are designed for beginners but even if you're a seasoned forager, there's something magical about the shared excitement of discovering mushrooms together!
Please note that these walks only take place during the main mushroom foraging season from September to November (exact dates vary from season to season).
Following an introductory talk, you'll spend about three hours on a guided foraging walk. You will learn:
  • The relationship between mycorrhizal fungi and trees and their preferred habitats
  • How to identify a handful of choice edible mushrooms for novice foragers
  • Which mushrooms to avoid (as they could be poisonous)
  • Foraging do’s and don’ts and laws
  • Tips on picking and harvesting, cooking and preserving different wild mushrooms
You'll meet Adi who is a member of the Association of Foragers and your fellow foragers in the middle of a well-established forest, and explore the publicly accessible areas in a group of up to 13 people. Travel to the meeting point is by car or by train and cab, and you can get there in just over an hour by car from South East London. You will receive with the invitation the exact location about one week before the walk. You can join a WhatsApp group to organise a car or taxi share. To keep on learning you can share photos, tips and questions after the walk.
Please note: I have learned over the years that there is no guarantee that we find (m)any mushrooms. I can promise you though that we will have fun day out!

Adi's Urban Mushrooms
Adi's Urban Mushrooms

Hi, I'm Adi, the founder of Adi's Urban Mushrooms, and I'm thrilled to share mush love with you.
My journey into the world of fungi is rooted in a lifelong passion for nature and sustainability. I've always loved mushroom foraging - I've been doing it since I was a teenager - and dreamed of diving deeper into mycology.
After over 30 years as a social worker and academic, and with a deep understanding of learning and skill development, which I developed in my PhD, I decided not to wait for retirement to bring this dream to life. In 2021, I founded the non-profit company Urban Mushrooms London Ltd to create a space where people could learn about and experience the amazing potential of mushrooms and fungi. Adi's Urban mushroom is an urban social enterprise inspired by nature!
Teaching and sharing knowledge is a big part of who I am. I spent over 15 years as a lecturer, and I love helping people learn about nature's hidden wonders—whether that's through growing mushrooms at home, foraging them in the wild, learning to cook with them, or understanding their role in ecology. Lots of people are coming back and leaving 5 start Google reviews.
My workshops are all about hands-on learning, and participants range from mushroom enthusiasts to those just curious about fungi. I work with lots of community garden groups and even a university to help their volunteers and students develop ways of growing mushrooms or exploring mycelium as a material. These workshops are a really rewarding way to connect with people, create community and spread awareness of what mushrooms can offer.
In 2023, I launched the South London Mushroom Club, and this has been a huge success. It allows mushrooms enthusiasts - call me a nerd - to connect and engage in varied mushroom related activities, from growing to cooking and art.
When I am not sharing my passion, I grow my mushrooms locally at the Remakery in Brixton, using upcycled materials and agricultural waste, so the mushrooms you get from me are as sustainable as they are fresh. I sell these at local farmers' markets where I love connecting with people in the community.
Whether it’s my fresh mushrooms, mushroom tinctures, mushroom grow kits or the cultivation and foraging workshops, there’s something here for everyone who wants to explore the world of fungi.
Thanks for taking the time to get to know me - I look forward to meeting you and sharing my passion for mushrooms, helping you on your journey into the fascinating world of fungi!
