What you'll do

Paint and make new friends or share some laughter with old friends at this relaxed unguided painting class in London.

You will be using acrylic paints on canvas. Don't worry if you've never tried these painting techniques before! No experience is needed and is perfect for anyone who just wants to get creative.

Just pick up some paints and a canvas, put on your apron and you're ready to go! Whether you come along with friends or fly solo, everyone is welcome to come and get creative. Plus, we will have tea and coffee for sale as well as some snacks.

Please note this is an unguided class

Up to 2 hours of painting- for additional hours its £8 per hour

When you're on the hunt for things to do in London with your pals, this workshop is sure to tick all the boxes. It's super easy to plan as all the art supplies are provided and you can sip on some drinks you buy at the venue!

Art Play London was founded by Silva Castellani in 2018, starting in galleries such as Phillips, and pop up venues around London.

Art Play is now a new art studio which opened in East London in February 2022, where children and adults of all ages are free to release their imaginations and inner creativity.

Art Play has a strong focus and the environment and aims to educate children and adults on their environmental impact through art, using a variety of sustainable mediums and materials.

Art Play is part of the worldwide Precious Plastic community which means it will be a plastic collection point for people to drop off their HDPE plastic which would otherwise end up in landfills or the ocean. The plastic is then shredding and melted and turned into useful objects and pieces of art, such as plant pots and coasters.

Overall great experience - I booked out an unguided free flow painting session for my mum's 60th birthday and it turned out lovely. The staff were helpful even when a few of us were running late. The equipment was pretty good and we got to take the paintings home after. Lovely atmosphere, and it was a calming activity. Will definitely do it again.

This was an amazing workshop. We were greeted by a staff member and shown all of the equipment we could use and left to get on with our painting!
The space was lovely, lots of different workshops going on and it was handy to be able to buy snacks and drinks too!

It was my first time painting and it was a fantastic experience. The place is very welcoming, the staff were kind and all the materials were available: canvas, brushes and acrylic paints. It was Sunday morning and little by little the place filled up, there were a lot of people painting, doing pottery or creating scented candles, some in silence, some laughing out loud. There was an incredible atmosphere of friendship and relaxation. It was possible to order drinks and food, in the end my daughter and I were supposed to stay for a couple of hours and instead we stayed for 4 hours. We will come back for sure.

I loved this place, the timing is good for the free flow you get to correct - guess some of the brushes are a little hard given how others have used them so may need more regular washing throughout day - otherwise it’s fun :)

Incredible experience.
Location is great, right inside Spitalfields market so we grabbed some great food first. Good selection of affordable drinks inside. Lovely friendly staff. Good materials for painting and lots of creativity in the air.

Would really recommend We booked the 3 hour unguided session as we wanted to do our own thing, and it was a great set up. There were lots of other things going on, such as candle making and a clay class, so it made for a really nice creative and lively environment to be in.

After seeing a tiktok video I decided to try this out and absolutely loved it! The atmosphere is great and it's really simple/ easy to get started. I will say though maybe if they had a sign for when guests come to know where to go because its a little confusing If you've never been. So like maybe a "please wait here' and someone comes to take your booking. £18 for 3 hours is amazing. Love it and will be coming here often.

ArtPlay was a wonderful day out for me and my wife. Everyone was incredibly friendly (shoutout to Abi!), and the whole atmosphere was so relaxed and serene. The space is quite small but they do the best with the space they have, would have been better to have more colours available as some were unable to be used as they didn't have enough paint in them but there are o there colour options available

It was a free flow painting class, so there were no dedicated "teachers" per say. But I loved how friendly all the staff were, and how patient they were with me to help me get started (I haven't painted in 10 years and was completely lost and felt very out of place at first!). Hi, I had booked myself for the free flowing painting workshop with Artplay. It’s located in middle of the old spittlefield market. It is a great place to spend a relaxing afternoon painting and sipping some tea with friends & family. All painting material is provided and is quite spacious (busy too). Much recommended if you are looking to spend a fun day in East London!

First time here so was a little unsure what to expect, i had the unguided session booked. Upon arrival i was shown where the paints,brushes etc were and then it was a free for all on where to sit, later on this would prove to not be ideal as they had to move people around to accomodate a class. The overall atmosphere was really positive maybe a little loud and chaotic at times but nothing that would stop me comimg back! Lots of paints to pick from, brushes were a bit beat up but usable. I was very happy with the outcome of my painting despite being a beginner and id definately come back for a guided session. I think am improvment could be made by maybe providing a few more material options such as markers,sponges, stencils etc

I attended an unguided painting class and I couldn’t recommend it enough! Really great value for money and a really fun afternoon/evening. If you are looking for something fun to do by yourself, with friends or are looking for a relaxing activity - this would be the one! The venue (Spitalfields) is lovely and all materials are provided. You don’t need to be any good at painting to attend. Can’t wait to go back for another class!

I’ve been to two unguided free flow painting classes now, last week I was with Dawn and yesterday with Olivia. Both workers were very friendly and helpful, Dawn gave me advice for mixing a skin tone shade which I greatly appreciated Art play is a real east London gem with a nice laid back vibe, all the equipment you need is readily available in abundance and I think the free flow painting sessions are extremely good value. I’d never tried painting before but it’s soooo much fun and I can’t wait to come back again. Thank you art play for helping me discover a new hobby

Nice set up but for the free flow painting, I was hoping to at least have people on hand to help guide a little or to give support and tips if needed. The sip and paint looked fun but I’d recommend lowering the price if you’re just offering just a small canvas and paints.

The welcome and introduction was without enthusiasm and care taken with it all was minimal. I wasn’t shown aprons or told to wear one - consequence of paint squirting everywhere was that I ruined t shirt, trousers and shoes! Acrylic paint very difficult to remove so care should be taken with beginners not familiar with the space. The attendant did give me a refund which I appreciated but showed no interest otherwise in our experience- a bit disappointing overall. The concept is great but it would help if delivered with more enthusiasm and joy!

My friends and I could not recommend this space enough!

Whether you’re alone in search for a great relaxing space to escape the hustle environment of the city, or if you’re looking for a wholesome and engaging activity to share with your friends and/or family! The location is perfect, right in the heart of East London surrounded by delicious, unique food spots including Spitalfields Market.

It’s easy to find, very reasonably priced, and they offer a range of materials and tools to use! The team were so accommodating and happy to help :) A pleasant way to relax and express your creativity.

Would be good if they get Wi-Fi as I struggled with poor internet (which I needed to help me mix colours haha!)

A very cathartic few hours can be had at Art Play, which is assuredly one of the more tranquil backdrops to spend an afternoon in London. Paints, brushes, canvases, and various other implements and decorative miscellanea are organised in a very orderly and accessible manner, which leaves only a certain degree of controlled chaos to convey on the canvas.

This was great fun and would recommend the free flow to anyone who enjoys painting or wants to begin and get creative. The bar was a bonus and staff were friendly, but we had to get up and move halfway through painting to accommodate for a larger group. This could have been communicated better upon arrival to avoid disruption.

Overall a great day and a lot of fun, will be back :)

Had a great time at the Art Play free flow canvas painting workshop! Aija and team were really helpful & accommodating. It was my birthday and they were nice enough to store the cake and bring it out for me at the end of the session :) Tried the salted caramel latte which was really yum! The venue was really nice, we loved the vibe! The materials provided were great too- all the acrylic paint we needed and more & a good variety of brushes. Overall a fun & relaxing experience, definitely recommend

A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Art play is in a nice open, relaxed and quiet venue with ample art supplies. We signed up to the Free flow painting session where you simply select the colours you want to use, sit down and start painting exactly what you want. A supervisor was on hand to answer any questions and serve drinks. Thoroughly recommended if you enjoy anything creative and don't particularly to want to draw/paint something specific.

I enjoyed my time doing the free flow painting. All supplies are provided and staff were polite and welcoming.

I had an 11am class, which started 20 minutes late unfortunately and the coffee machine was broken which was a bummer.

But besides these things, it was great value for money and I’m really happy with the art I got to produce.

Good value for money and great location in Spitalfields market. Enjoyed it much more than the scheduled paint and sip class I did somewhere else before. You can actually chat to your friends at the same time :)

I contacted the company to ask if I can change the day I attend the lass to another day, and I did this more than a week before the class. They say they allow rescheduling so I thought this would be no problem but that was not the case. I called texted and even emailed the company and had no response. It appears they are more content in taking people's money than providing art classes. I would therefore avoid this company completely.

The teacher was nice, it was a free flow class so there wasn’t any tuition but she was regularly checking to see if we needed anything. 100% worth the cost and lovely atmosphere. My only criticism is that the venue had changed location but there is no note of it on the website and the front of the original building has no information stating the class has moved location. There was a note on the other side of the building but it took a while to find any information as to where the new venue was. Otherwise it was a brilliant experience that I would recommend to everyone to try at least once.

This class was fun and affordable. I was a little disappointed because it said that it would last 2 to 3 hours but after exactly 2hours we were told to pack things up as there was another class booked. I was also confused with the instructions given regarding the painting part itself, which were very specific at first and then non-existent. Personally I would
prefer either full instructions or none at all. However overall I did really enjoy this class and it was very therapeutic! It's definitely a fun experience to do in London~

We loved the unguided painting session! Would definitely recommend and absolutely worth it for the price. For £15 we got 3 hours of painting and all the equipment we needed. I just wish there was the option to stay for longer as I feel like we needed it!

We had a lovely time at the unguided painting session! We were provided with everything required - a canvas, an easel, paint brushes, a huge range of colours and even an apron to wear. There's a café one can order from while painting. Our host was lovely and she gave us some helpful tips to get started. Overall a great experience and a really fun activity for our Easter weekend. ❤️

The teacher was warm and welcoming, she came around and was able to offer tips and guidance on mixing colours and our paintings. I was happy with the materials provided; an apron, paints, paintbrushes and a decent sized canvas. The venue is a spacious studio with tables and benches to work on, and a clothes rail on the side for your coats. There was also a decent range of drinks and snacks available to purchase.
Overall, I liked the setup of everything and enjoyed my time which flew by!

Our teacher Emily was very helpful and gave us clear instructions on where everything was and what we had to do. It was an enjoyable experience and the environment was quite comfortable. However the paint available was very limited in terms of colours.
