This special one-day bushcraft, folklore and foraging workshop is built upon the premise that we are storying creatures - that it is through story and anecdote we learn best. Join this nature-fuelled class to boost your confidence outdoors.

Guided by a folklore expert, you'll be taken through a range of bushcraft skills as you enjoy hearing folklore and folktales. The stories you explore during your workshop will really bring your bushcrafting to life.

Folklore and stories offer us a fascinating window into history and help us understand the relationships our ancestors shared with the plants, trees and creatures we live alongside today. You'll focus on this premise throughout your folkcraft class as you explore the four core branches of bushcraft - shelter, fire, food and sharp-edged tools. Your teacher will weave a web of ancient tales around everything you do.

This full-day folkcraft workshop covers an introduction to:

  • Plant and tree identification.
  • Seasonal foraging.
  • Wild crafting such as making cordage and mats.
  • Natural navigation techniques and map navigation.
  • Shelter building using tarps, ropes and knots.
  • Using tools outdoors including axes, knives and saws.
  • Fire lighting, types of fires and campfire cooking.
  • The folklore and stories of the trees, plants and creatures encountered.

As part of your experience, you'll also enjoy a guided walk in the Black Mountains, Brecon Beacons and a delicious vegetarian supper cooked on the campfire.

In addition, you have the option to camp overnight on the Friday and Saturday of this workshop at Cwmffrwd Farm Campsite at no extra charge. The farm is in a Dark Sky Reserve and is perfect for stargazing!

By the end of this folkcraft workshop, you'll have the skills and stories to really boost your confidence outdoors. You'll also have deepened your understanding of how folk before us connected with the natural world.
