In this workshop, you'll learn the traditional technique of Florentine engraving, often referred to as a Florentine finish. Originating in Renaissance Italy, Florentine engraving is a decorative metal texturing technique that creates a distinctive silk-like, woven surface of fine, light-reflecting lines.
Through demonstration, discussion, and guided practice, you'll learn how to create this unique finish and gain the confidence to incorporate it into your own jewellery and metalwork projects.
You'll complete your own sterling silver pendant featuring a traditional Florentine finish.
Working with a pre-prepared silver pendant, you'll use specialist engraving tools to create the characteristic textured surface associated with Florentine engraving. By the end of the workshop, you'll take home a finished pendant showcasing this distinctive Renaissance-inspired finish.
  • Learn the fundamental techniques of Florentine-style engraving and how to create its characteristic textured surface.
  • Build confidence using traditional engraving tools and understanding their applications.
  • Develop an understanding of the historical and aesthetic principles behind Florentine engraving.
  • Complete a sterling silver pendant decorated using traditional Florentine engraving techniques.
The day will begin with an introduction to Florentine engraving and looking at examples demonstrating the distinctive finish. Your tutor will explain the history of the technique and its origins in Renaissance Italy, as well as its continued use in contemporary jewellery and metalwork.
A demonstration of the engraving process will follow, introducing the specialist tools used to create the finish and explaining how controlled, repeated cuts are used to build up the characteristic texture. Particular attention will be given to creating consistent parallel lines and layered patterns that produce the woven effect associated with Florentine work.
Each stage of the process will be demonstrated throughout the day, allowing you to observe the techniques clearly before attempting them yourself. Students will work through each step on their own pendant, with guidance and individual support provided throughout.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have developed a practical understanding of Florentine engraving and completed a finished silver pendant featuring this distinctive textured finish.
