If you've ever wondered how our ancestors ignited that first flame, now is your chance to discover the secrets behind fire making with this all-day firecraft class in Thorncombe Wood.

In the first part of the day, your teacher will help you master the different methods of creating an ember or a flame using natural materials. You'll explore modern, ancient and pre-historic ignition methods and learn the fundamentals of lighting and maintaining a fire, whether it’s a chilly spring morning or the depths of snowy winter!

Part two will focus on the often overlooked but just as important element of firecraft—maintaining a fire. You'll learn about finding materials, building your flame and understanding fire as you spend time practising and ensure you have the knowledge and ability to maintain a fire.

Don't worry if you're a complete beginner when it comes to bushcraft, as your teacher will be on hand to support you step-by-step as you get to grips with tree identification, spotting deadwood, and general woodland knowledge in a welcoming environment.

You'll finish this workshop with the respect, care and understanding needed to create a good fire, along with the knowledge to stay safe on all your future adventures!

This class will cover:

  • Ignition - modern, ancient and pre-historic methods.

My journey into ancient ways officially began in 2011, when I started an apprenticeship with renowned woodsman Ben Law.

This apprenticeship saw me living full time in a 100-acre coppice in West Sussex, managing the woodland in the traditional way and learning ancient skills such as charcoal making, timber framing and the green wood crafts that used to supply us with the majority of our everyday items.

Following this apprenticeship, I moved to Dorset with my wife, started a family and began to pursue my fascination with ancient technology and ways of living full time.

My belief in, and respect for indigenous societies across the world is at the core of everything I do. Societies across the globe that have an understanding of the natural world, and our place in it, far surpass our western ideas. I've spent my life trying my best to learn from these societies and rediscover the scraps of our own here in this small corner of England.

This fascination with ancient hunter-gatherer societies, different ways of living and natural history drives my passion to learn, create and pass on knowledge which I believe can only be for the betterment of our society as a whole.
