Drawing Workshop: Draw What You Can't See

It's a wildly creative experiment in perception, mindfulness and letting go of control.

2 hours Class size 1 to 20 (public dates), 5 to 50   £45

What happens when you try to draw something you've never seen? Or when your carefully planned masterpiece suddenly takes a completely unexpected turn?
Welcome to a drawing workshop where the rules get turned upside down, mistakes become opportunities, and the results might surprise you!
Draw What You Can't See is a playful, unconventional two-hour workshop combining creative drawing experiments with mindfulness. You'll explore how your senses, expectations and imagination influence what you create, while discovering new ways to enjoy the artistic process.
And you certainly don't need to know how to draw!
Throughout the workshop, you'll take part in five unusual creative challenges:
  • The Terrible Portrait Challenge: Discover the unexpected freedom of deliberately drawing a dreadful portrait, including an attempt without looking at your paper.
  • The Mystery Object: Explore an unfamiliar object secretly placed inside a bag by someone else. Using only your sense of touch, you'll investigate its shape, texture and form before attempting to draw something you can't see. The big reveal might surprise you!
  • The Drawing That Fights Back: Begin a drawing, then respond to increasingly ridiculous instructions that disrupt your plans. Even your spontaneous reactions, expressed through words, phrases or marks, become part of the artwork itself.
  • The Accidental Masterpiece: Discover unexpected possibilities hidden within your earlier drawings and transform them into imaginative new compositions.
  • The Final Transformation: Bring everything together by developing one of your drawings into something completely unexpected.
Along the way, you'll discover how mindfulness can help you notice your thoughts, sensations and creative reactions as they arise, and how becoming more aware of these experiences can open up fresh artistic possibilities.
Led by an experienced artist, educator and accredited mindfulness teacher Steve Gooch, this workshop is designed for complete beginners as well as people who already enjoy drawing.
Expect laughter, surprises, creative experiments and probably some wonderfully strange artwork.
All you need is a few simple materials, an open mind and a willingness to experiment. The most interesting thing you create might be something you never imagined drawing!

FAQ

What happens if my drawings don't turn out as expected?
That's part of the fun! Some of the most interesting discoveries happen when a drawing takes an unexpected direction. You'll be encouraged to experiment, enjoy the surprises and see where your imagination takes you. There's no right or wrong result, and every drawing becomes part of your creative adventure.

I've spent much of my life exploring two things that continue to fascinate me: the extraordinary possibilities of human creativity and the strange ways we manage to convince ourselves we're not particularly creative.
Along the way, I've had some rather interesting adventures.
My artistic journey has included work involving internationally renowned artists such as Joe Tilson and Richard Deacon, as well as Nick Pope, and an illustrated limited edition of poetry by the French Surrealist Paul Éluard. I've also spent decades teaching art, encouraging people to experiment, challenge conventions and discover abilities they never realised they possessed.
Art and teaching have taken me around the world. I've lived and worked in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Sudan, and taught workshops in Jordan, Cyprus and Lithuania. I've found myself in Egypt during the Arab Spring uprising and experienced periods of political and military unrest in Khartoum, Sudan.
And then there are the stranger coincidences. For a time, I lived just three doors away from Osama bin Laden's former house in Khartoum, Sudan. Later, while teaching art in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, one of my art students turned out to be his niece. These are the sorts of experiences that make you wonder whether you should be writing an autobiography rather than another teaching manual.
I've actually written three books so far, although none is quite that autobiography.
I hold an MA in Education and have taught art to students of all ages and abilities, but the qualifications and international adventures are only part of the story.
What I really love about teaching is that wonderful moment when somebody produces something, looks at it in astonishment and says, 'I didn't know I could do that!' I've witnessed that moment countless times, and it never gets old.
I've also spent around 30 years teaching mindfulness and meditation, which has given me a rather unusual perspective on creativity. I'm fascinated by how we perceive the world, how our minds influence what we create and what happens when we begin questioning the rules we've unconsciously imposed on ourselves.
My workshops are about curiosity, experimentation, discovery and occasionally making a glorious mess of things. You don't need expensive materials or some mysterious artistic gift. Just bring a willingness to explore, have fun and perhaps surprise yourself.
These days, I'm still creating, teaching, developing new workshops and contemplating another return to Egypt, a country that seems determined to keep pulling me back.
After all these years, I'm still convinced that the most interesting discoveries happen when we step outside the familiar. Preferably with a pencil and notebook in hand and absolutely no idea where the next line is going to take us.
