Fancy trying something new and having a go at designing your very own tartan? This creative online course is designed to guide you through the complete tartan design process, from your first ideas and colour inspiration through to a finished digital tartan design.
The course consists of two 3-hour online tutorials, giving you 6 hours of live one-to-one tuition in total, delivered via Zoom. Additional time and support are also included for finalising your tartan, refining the design, and developing a logo or identity around it if required.
Session one:
  • The first session begins with an introduction to tartan, its structure, and the design process.
  • How a tartan is constructed.
  • Colour selection and colour relationships.
  • Developing a story or meaning behind your tartan.
  • Traditional and contemporary tartan design.
  • Creating a balanced sett.
  • Different digital design tools and techniques.
  • Ways of developing your initial ideas.
Together, we will begin developing the foundations of your own tartan. After the first session, you will have time to experiment, gather inspiration, and develop your ideas before returning for the second tutorial.
Session two:
  • Bring your ideas together and begin turning them into a fully visualised tartan design.
  • Explore different colour combinations, proportions, and sett variations while gradually refining the design.
By the end of the course, you will have developed and created your own finished tartan. For weavers, the course can also be tailored to take the design further, including developing the tartan into a practical weaving plan, thread count, and sett suitable for producing cloth.
Tartan design often continues to evolve after the initial design sessions, so support does not simply stop when the Zoom tutorials finish. If your tartan needs further adjustments, colour changes, or refinement before production or registration, continued design support will be available by email or Zoom while the final design is completed.

I’m Ashleigh Slater, a Scottish textile designer, tartan designer and trained Master Weaver based in Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
I have worked within textiles, weaving and tartan design for many years, combining traditional skills with contemporary digital design to create tartans that are personal, meaningful and relevant to the people and organisations they represent.
My background is in Textile Design, and my work has included bespoke tartan commissions, hand-weaving, textile development, community projects and creative education. I particularly enjoy taking something with such a rich Scottish history as tartan and showing how it can be approached in a fresh and contemporary way.
Teaching is an important part of my practice. I enjoy working one-to-one with people and helping them turn an initial idea, story or collection of colours into something they can actually see and develop.
My tartan design workshops are relaxed, creative and practical. You don’t need to be an artist, designer or weaver to take part. I’ll guide you through the process from understanding how tartan works to developing colour, proportion, sett and visual identity.
For those with weaving experience, I can also take the process further and help translate a digital tartan design into a practical weaving plan.
Whether you’re designing a tartan for your family, wedding, business, organisation or simply for the experience of creating something uniquely your own, my aim is for you to finish the course with both a new understanding of tartan and a design you can be genuinely proud of.
