If you're interested in having a more sustainable lifestyle, or are looking for a unique gift for the eco-conscious soul in your life, this darning class in North London is a fantastic opportunity to learn the lost art of darning.
The most sustainable clothes are the ones we already own. By learning how to mend clothes, you'll be able to extend the lives of the things you own and embrace a more conscious consumer mindset, having a positive effect on people and the planet.
Not to mention that the act of darning itself is highly therapeutic, rewarding and is a commitment of care that brings us closer to our possessions. It's also a brilliant skill for any aspiring knitter or tailor to have in your repertoire.
During this workshop, you'll start with a brief history of techniques from different cultures and look at some examples and tools. The majority of the time will then be given over to hands-on practical work, as Socko founder Emma teaches you how to create a sturdy and beautiful visible mend.
The session will be fuelled by the obligatory bottomless biscuit tin and hot drinks!
Groups are kept small so that everyone gets enough one-to-one attention. Whether you've never even picked up a needle or you're an experienced fabric crafter, this introductory session is the ideal stepping stone to a more sustainable life.
What you'll get
  • All the materials and tools you need to learn the art of darning including:
  • A needle and needle threader to keep
  • A chunky knitted cotton swatch with a hole in it
  • Contrast coloured yarn

Emma is the founder of sustainable British sock brand Socko. Socko’s mission is to extend the active life of clothing by re-teaching the lost art of darning. Emma’s dream of Socko began when searching for meaning in her work. She saw that her job satisfaction came when she was able to connect what she’d done with her working day with its positive impact upon others. Through combining her talent for craft with her love of people and planet, she identified her business idea. Socko launched its very first pair of sustainable socks at the end of 2018. Emma lives in north-east London with her partner and their sausage dog Alan.
