Creative Stitching Embroidery Course

Learn Embroidery for Connection, Resilience, and Wellbeing … or simply to Create

5 x 2 hours Class size 1 to 6     label £110

Learn embroidery stitches and techniques in a mindful and calming environment. An opportunity to expand and develop a creative play practise using embroidery in its broadest sense.
This series of workshops uses the Stitch Club philosophy of allowing each participant to follow their personal project while stretching and challenging their individual skills. Stitching in a group is a particularly human thing to do and is both grounding and affirming.
You can create samples or work towards a unique piece of 2D or 3D art or a practical item. Either your own idea or follow one of ours.
The sessions are led by Samantha Harvey, a textile artist who loves to stitch to create texture and colourful marks in almost anything and loves to share the fun and wellbeing it generates. Each Stitch Club is adapted to the interests and skills of the people who come along. It is a small group, so you will have experience new ideas you want to learn, and a few you didn't know you wanted to know all in a safe non-judgemental space.
Over the 5-week course you will have the opportunity to learn:
  • a variety of hand stitches
  • how to use a normal domestic sewing machine for 'free machine' embroidery
  • 3D embroidery and embellishments
  • simple applique and image transfer
  • how to get going on your project
  • practical tips
Weekly plan:
  • Session 1: We will get to know each other, our skills and what we would like to make. We will work some stitches and start a sample 'book'.
  • Session 2: Introduction to machine embroidery and planning/creating/designing.
  • Session 3: Depending on the needs of your work, we will work on some 3D embroidery and embellishments using beads.
  • Sessions 4 & 5: Work on your project with new stitches and techniques added relative to the needs of the group's work.

Stitch Club

Stitch Club provides the opportunity to challenge and develop your creative and practical skills.
We specialise in creating a safe and calm environment full of inspiration where you can concentrate on learning new skills, experiment and be creative.
Most of our adult sessions are designed for beginners and those looking to revisit dormant skills. We work on the basis that no two people have exactly the same idea, dexterity or sense of aesthetics and we embrace and encourage this diversity. Working with small groups ensures that we can make this work for everyone.
We also run personalised workshops and one-to-one/two sessions.
We have been running Stitch Club since 2008 and we have had the pleasure of mentoring many of our young people from absolute beginners to talented adult makers. Our regular adult dressmaking sessions are usually over subscribed with most stitchers returning for 8 or more terms.
Our workshops are run by Sam Harvey, a textile and mixed media artist and Christina Figur and fashion designer and teacher.
