In this 2 day workshop, students will be constructing and casting shapes, and are encouraged to experiment with different finishes, textures and materials. Participants will have the opportunity to think through making and explore material qualities hands-on.
This workshop is designed to both introduce participants to the methods and processes involved in casting and moulding in plaster and concrete, whilst also encouraging the exploration of experimental mould construction and the possibilities of negative space (the mould) and positive space (the cast).
Day one
Methods and Experimentation Day one will introduce the two main casting materials that we will be using through several quick moulding and casting exercises including making relief panels from clay and sketch moulds from plastic sheet/cardboard. We will follow this up by exploring colouring through making bowl forms to also understand reinforcement of plaster to enable it be cast hollow. We will end the day with by discussing possible personal projects for the following day and other techniques that participants might wish to see demonstrated.
Day 2
Personal Project and Extrapolation The second day is an open-ended exploration of the techniques learnt on day one through the development of a small personal project. The tutor will be on hand to assist and go over techniques explored on the first day and offer advice and possible routes for development. There will also be small demonstrations of various forms of finishing plaster and concrete and discussions focused on where best to use each material and alternative materials and methods.
Please feel free to bring material to experiment with for mould making and casting into.
Open to all levels including beginners
Please note: The stated class duration includes a one-hour break for lunch.

The tutor did a good job and was most helpful in sorting out any difficulties and answering the many questions raised.The course was held on a very hot weekend, so it would have been helpful to have a water dispenser available on site. Also for follow up a list of material suppliers would have saved much time and trouble when sourcing our own raw materials following the introductory course.Generally well worth attending and will return for other courses and use of the workshopsRon Bennett

London Sculpture Workshop is an independent sculpture studio in Woolwich, South East London, located within Thames Side Studios, offering exceptional facilities for artists and those interested in making three-dimensional work.
Our short course programme covers a wide variety of technical and skill-based processes, taught by practising artists in superbly equipped workshops. We teach a range of skills including welding, casting, mould making, metal and woodwork, ceramics and hot metal practices.

LSW has partnered with a number of prestigious organisations including; The British Museum, The Crafts Council, CRISIS, The Architecture Association and Oxford Brooke's University.
