Discover Collage

Discover Collage

You’ll be introduced to a short history of collage as a form of expression. Discover how 19th-century English women used collage albums to gossip, joke, and imagine other lives; how Surrealist artists used collage to make familiar things appear strange; and how collage can be used to transform images, explore identities, communicate ideas, and excite the senses.

Gather inspiration

Gather Inspiration

Look at a few examples of collage approaches, from playful combinations to more thoughtful image disruptions, to spark ideas for your own work. This draws on my 25 years as an artist and university teacher, but designed to be relaxed, hands-on, and suitable for complete beginners.

Cut, Collect, and Compose

Cut, Collect, and Compose

Using magazines, printed images, coloured papers, and found materials, you’ll begin selecting, cutting, tearing, and collecting fragments that catch your attention. You’ll experiment with combining images in unexpected ways, discovering how collage can transform familiar pictures into something playful, surreal, poetic, abstract, or entirely new.

Arrange and Reimagine

Arrange and Reimagine

As your collage develops, you’ll play with layering, scale, and unexpected image combinations to create something entirely your own. Often the most exciting moments happen through experimentation — when unrelated fragments suddenly connect and a new image or story begins to emerge.

Refine, Glue, and Take Home Your Collages

Refine, Glue, and Take Home Your Collages

You’ll have time to make final adjustments, glue your works into place, and continue exploring different compositions. At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with collages to take home, along with new ideas for working creatively with images, materials, and visual storytelling.

Using a hand-picked array of magazines, printed images, coloured papers, and interesting found materials, you'll learn how to select, cut, tear, and collect fragments that catch your attention. This casual, friendly session encourages pure experimentation, meaning there's absolutely no need for prior skills or a background in drawing. • 5/5 from Kim Price, attended Sep 2026: Just want to say how much we enjoyed the workshop! I went along with my more artistic family member and I really loved feeling able to engage in something I dont normally make space for, usually feeling too clueless to meaningfully taking part. We had so much fun creating our own collage and I especially enjoyed learning about a range of collage artists & the diversity and impact of their work. Thank you Ehryn for creating a bridge for me to get some exposure to collaging, and for making us feel so welcome.
  • 5/5 from Mags McDonagh, attended Sep 2026: Really positive, pleasant and informative class for my daughter and I. Ehryn shared her vast knowledge and experience of the art form in an engaging and assessible form helping also to show us techniques and skills we could apply to our own pieces. There were plenty of materials on hand to allow everyone attend to create their own individual collage which was great fun.
  • 5/5 from Sholto McMillan, attended Jul 2026: I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. I’ve worked in collage before but this expanded the ways I could approach it and was a wonderful spur to make and explore more. Ehryn is such a lovely teacher and the references she gave were all brilliant, varied and inspiring. The environment was lovely and stress free, with tea and biscuits, and the interactions with other people making were very valuable as we all inspired each other, and came out with very different results. I’m so glad I went, and I would recommend to people with all levels of experience in collage.
  • 5/5 from Sophia Tzanaki, attended Jul 2026: This was a great introduction to collage for anyone who hasn't tried it before. Erhyn was clearly very knowledgeable and happy to answer questions throughout the session. I appreciated the variety of magazines and materials available, and it was interesting to see how quickly different ideas started coming together. I ended up happily surprised by what I was able to create despite being new to collage.
  • 5/5 from Maria Bassoli, attended Jul 2026: I thoroughly enjoyed the collage workshop on Saturday. The studio was cosy, full of natural light, and provided the perfect creative environment. Erhyn was a wonderful host—warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. She began the session with a fascinating introduction to the history of collage, which gave valuable context and inspiration for the creative work that followed. The atmosphere throughout the workshop was friendly, relaxed, and supportive. It felt like a safe space to experiment, explore something new, and express creativity without any pressure. With only four participants in the class, Erhyn was able to spend time with each of us individually, offering thoughtful suggestions and encouragement tailored to our projects. And she prepared tea like an old friend! What surprised me most was how much meaning emerged from the collage I created. After the workshop, I sent a photo of it to my daughter, who immediately connected with its themes. The piece touches on issues that are close to her studies and values—migration, war, the love of life, injustice, and resistance. She loved it so much that I have decided to give it to her when she returns to Edinburgh in September for her final year at university. It feels far more personal and meaningful than a good-luck card; it is something I created with my heart. I left feeling inspired, confident, and excited to continue exploring collage. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone looking to try something creative in a welcoming and nurturing environment.
  • 5/5 from Sandra Buitrago, attended Jul 2026: I attend this collage workshop without any experience or a clue of what was to come. it was awesome, it featured creative prompts and had a very nice and relaxed environment, we had a fantastic teacher with brilliant guidance. she help us with ideas and different sort of materials and fantastic magazines to use, being very friendly and patient. the workshop was very cosy and had great light. at the end of the workshop I ended with a fantastic piece and a happy heart. Ehryn is a fantastic teacher and would definitely recommend the fantastic experience.

I spent most of my childhood making things — drawings, objects, plays, and performances. Art, theatre, and music have always been central to my life. When I was 14, my secondary school art teacher showed me how to make a drawing using two-point perspective, and I couldn’t believe what I had made. I’ve been chasing that feeling of joy and discovery in making ever since.
Trained in Canada and living in London since 2010, I have worked as a practising artist for 25 years. I work across collage, painting, drawing, and textiles, and my work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe, North America, Brazil, and China. I’ve received awards and grants to support my practice and research, and recently completed a PhD exploring feminist approaches to collage and image-making. Alongside my studio work, I teach Fine Art at university level.
Collage is central to my practice because it allows me to pull images apart and create new meanings, relationships, and visual possibilities. I love how collage can be both playful and deeply thoughtful at the same time. You don’t need to be good at art to discover something unexpected through cutting, layering, and experimenting.
Teaching is one of my favourite ways to connect with people creatively. I enjoy creating relaxed, welcoming workshop spaces where people can experiment freely, try things out, and surprise themselves. Some of the most exciting moments happen when someone who says “I’m not creative” makes something they didn’t know they were capable of.
I run small-group workshops from my studio in Homerton, East London, and I’m passionate about helping people slow down, work with their hands, and find joy in the things they make.
