Discover Collage

Discover Collage

You’ll be introduced to a short history of collage as a form of expression. Discover how 19th-century English women used collage albums to gossip, joke, and imagine other lives; how Surrealist artists used collage to make familiar things appear strange; and how collage can be used to transform images, explore identities, communicate ideas, and excite the senses.

Gather inspiration

Gather Inspiration

Look at a few examples of collage approaches, from playful combinations to more thoughtful image disruptions, to spark ideas for your own work. This draws on my 25 years as an artist and university teacher, but designed to be relaxed, hands-on, and suitable for complete beginners.

Cut, Collect, and Compose

Cut, Collect, and Compose

Using magazines, printed images, coloured papers, and found materials, you’ll begin selecting, cutting, tearing, and collecting fragments that catch your attention. You’ll experiment with combining images in unexpected ways, discovering how collage can transform familiar pictures into something playful, surreal, poetic, abstract, or entirely new.

Arrange and Reimagine

Arrange and Reimagine

As your collage develops, you’ll play with layering, scale, and unexpected image combinations to create something entirely your own. Often the most exciting moments happen through experimentation — when unrelated fragments suddenly connect and a new image or story begins to emerge.

Refine, Glue, and Take Home Your Collages

Refine, Glue, and Take Home Your Collages

You’ll have time to make final adjustments, glue your works into place, and continue exploring different compositions. At the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with collages to take home, along with new ideas for working creatively with images, materials, and visual storytelling.

Join this collage workshop in East London and step into an inspiring artist's studio for a relaxed, hands-on morning of visual storytelling. It's a completely low-pressure environment where you'll discover the rich history of collage as an expressive art form. You'll explore how 19th-century English women used collage albums to share gossip, trade jokes, and imagine other lives, as well as how Surrealist artists used the medium to make the familiar look beautifully strange. Guided by a local artist with 25 years experience and 10+ years of teaching fine art the university level, you'll view captivating examples of collage approaches – from playful combinations to thoughtful image disruptions – to spark ideas and ease any creative anxiety before you begin.
Using a hand-picked array of magazines, printed images, coloured papers, and interesting found materials, you'll learn how to select, cut, tear, and collect fragments that catch your attention. This casual, friendly session encourages pure experimentation, meaning there's absolutely no need for prior skills or a background in drawing. As your piece develops, you'll play with layering, scale, and unexpected image combinations to craft a composition that is entirely your own. Your teacher will show you how unrelated fragments can suddenly connect to tell a brand-new story. You'll have plenty of time to refine your layout, make final adjustments, and securely glue your pieces into place.
This revitalising workshop is a fantastic way to switch off from screen time, slow down, and enjoy a mindful break in a welcoming social setting. Whether you come along with your friends for a feel-good catch-up or arrive on your own to connect with a warm community of makers, you'll pick up new ideas for working creatively with imagery. You'll leave the studio feeling deeply inspired, carrying a collection of personal, story-rich keepsakes that are ready to show off at home.

I spent most of my childhood making things — drawings, objects, plays, and performances. Art, theatre, and music have always been central to my life. When I was 14, my secondary school art teacher showed me how to make a drawing using two-point perspective, and I couldn’t believe what I had made. I’ve been chasing that feeling of joy and discovery in making ever since.
Trained in Canada and living in London since 2010, I have worked as a practising artist for 25 years. I work across collage, painting, drawing, and textiles, and my work has been exhibited in the UK, Europe, North America, Brazil, and China. I’ve received awards and grants to support my practice and research, and recently completed a PhD exploring feminist approaches to collage and image-making. Alongside my studio work, I teach Fine Art at university level.
Collage is central to my practice because it allows me to pull images apart and create new meanings, relationships, and visual possibilities. I love how collage can be both playful and deeply thoughtful at the same time. You don’t need to be good at art to discover something unexpected through cutting, layering, and experimenting.
Teaching is one of my favourite ways to connect with people creatively. I enjoy creating relaxed, welcoming workshop spaces where people can experiment freely, try things out, and surprise themselves. Some of the most exciting moments happen when someone who says “I’m not creative” makes something they didn’t know they were capable of.
I run small-group workshops from my studio in Homerton, East London, and I’m passionate about helping people slow down, work with their hands, and find joy in the things they make.
