Collect your richly glazed work ready to hang after four weeks

Collect Your Richly Glazed Work Ready to Hang After Four Weeks

I will carefully dry, kiln fire and glaze your work, ready for collection four weeks after your class.

Learn about the rich and varied legend of the 'green man' (or woman!), how this mythical figure peeping from the natural world protects and celebrates the natural environment and is ever-present in the wheel of the year. Then create your own representation in a relief-modelled plaque that will hang in your garden or on an interior wall.
There'll be loads of resources ready to examine for inspiration in this small but companionable class, and you are welcome to bring your own natural finds, drawings, and ideas along. This is a legend that has changed a lot over centuries, so new interpretations and ideas are always welcome.
We’ll create a slab of clay and a template for the basic facial features, and then test out the mark-making possibilities of natural materials to create in clay a face peeping from leaves, stems, berries—everything from a rich seasonal natural world. I’ll show you how to select the right tools, create these pieces, and stick them down securely without cracking.
This is an immersive but friendly activity in a working pottery studio with a max group size of four. Expect quiet moments of thinking and experimentation but also kind exchanges of ideas and encouragement. Suitable for any level of starting skill.
I’ll show you the glaze and kiln process to come and will then tuck your work away to dry before twice firing and glazing for you. You will collect fully glazed and ready-to-hang work four weeks later (or postage can be organised).
It’s not hugely messy, but bring your own apron if required. Free and very easy parking on site or bus links from the Elizabeth line in Woolwich or Jubilee line at North Greenwich.
What you'll get
All materials and tools are provided.

FAQ

Is your studio easy to get to?
Yes and there are lots of options including buses and a train station within 15 mins walk. Or masses of free parking right on site within a few metres of my studio door, with level access. Longer riverside walk in’s from Woolwich or the O2 are possible and both have Thames clipper docks.
Will I get very dirty?
No, there will be clean up available and you can borrow an apron or bring your own. Clay will dry to brushed away dust very quickly in any case.
Is there an accessible toilet?
There is a toilet within my studio with level access.
See more FAQs
Can I sit down?
This is a stood activity around work benches. I can create sat space if you can give me notice so I can reconfigure the space.
Is this suitable for children?
The activity is brilliant for all but under 8’s will require additional help from you. My workbench is 90cms high so as a rough guide under 9’s will need sat spaces - please ask me about this.
Can I create a day out with this activity?
The studios is on the very pleasant and accessible Thames pathway, with interesting walks one way to Greenwich & the other to historic Woolwich. There is no restriction on parking time.

I am an experienced and friendly full time potter with a lovely working space within a vibrant makers creative community right by the Thames. I combine teaching privately and in community spaces with making hand built stoneware homewares for local sale at markets and in prize winning retailers. My ten years’ of teaching has included welcoming many individuals to my studio but also included primary to university level students, whole school arts week projects, SEN students, reach out for adults, adult and young person homeless and carers’ groups. This year I have formalised my teaching with a level 3 qualification, and also I love it, I really enjoy teaching.
It’s brilliant sharing the joy of clay work and the excitement of producing something personal or functional, & that’s even before explaining the miracle that glazing can achieve. At the end of class it’s satisfying to show the kiln and how the clay will progress through the process. And while it is such a pleasure to teach clay skills it’s also important to acknowledge the the well-being benefits, my small group classes allow for peaceful and companionable immersion in making or for a fun group when booked out by friends.
Come and share the clay! #ClayIsOurWay
