1. How did you get started with your craft and/or business, and why are you passionate about it? Was there a pivotal moment that sparked your interest?
Cooking has been my passion since the age of nine. Growing up, I was deeply immersed in the rich culinary traditions of Sri Lanka, learning recipes and techniques passed down through generations. This early exposure instilled in me a profound appreciation for my culture’s flavors and the stories they tell. As I pursued my career as a doctor and embraced roles as a teacher and mother, I realized the importance of preserving and sharing these culinary traditions, especially as they risk being lost over time. This realization was the pivotal moment that led me to create an experience where I could introduce others to the authentic tastes and techniques of Sri Lankan cuisine.
2. Why do you love teaching?
Teaching allows me to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and share the rich tapestry of Sri Lankan culture through its cuisine. I find immense joy in guiding others as they discover new flavors, techniques, and the stories behind each dish. Witnessing the excitement and satisfaction on participants’ faces as they create something delicious and meaningful is incredibly rewarding. Moreover, teaching provides an avenue to foster understanding and appreciation for a culture that might be unfamiliar to many, bridging gaps and building connections one dish at a time.
3. What’s something special or interesting about you or your experiences? Or maybe something most people don’t know about your craft?
One unique aspect of my experience is the fusion of my professional background with my culinary passion. Being a doctor, I bring an understanding of nutrition and health to the table, ensuring that the dishes we prepare are not only flavorful but also wholesome. Additionally, I am fluent in Tamil, English, and Dutch, which allows me to connect with a broader audience and share the nuances of Sri Lankan cuisine in multiple languages. Many might not know that traditional Sri Lankan cooking involves intricate spice blends and techniques that have been honed over centuries. Through my sessions, I aim to demystify these methods, making them accessible and enjoyable for everyone.
