Ceramics Class: Coil-throwing on the Wheel

Learn how to throw larger pots, without having to centre an enormous amount of clay

3 hours Class size 1 to 2 guests

£130 - £150 (£150 per guest when you book for 1 guest, £130/guest for 2 guests) (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Take your pottery skills further in this one-off, three-hour intermediate throwing workshop, specifically designed to help you learn how to create larger pots without needing to centre enormous lumps of clay.
This focused activity begins with sketching a design for the larger form you aim to achieve. You’ll then centre an amount of clay you feel comfortable managing on the wheel – your tutor can offer helpful centring tips if needed. The core of the session involves learning a specific technique: producing long coils and skillfully adding them to your base. Your tutor will demonstrate how to add these coils in a way that allows you to continue throwing, increasing the height and shaping the profile of your pot to match your initial sketch. You'll continue adding and throwing coils until your desired form takes shape.
Towards the end of the workshop, there will be time to trim your creation. You then have the choice: leave equipped with your valuable new skill, or choose to have your pot fired (please note there is an additional cost for firing) to keep as a permanent piece. You'll finish this session feeling capable, having mastered a practical technique for scaling up your pottery creations.
What you'll get
Clay is included, firing of the final piece is not. I have tools and wheels - all you need to bring is an apron!

Hello Potters!
My name is Penelope, I am a ceramic artist and teacher, and I specialise in throwing large pots, using the coil-throwing technique. I can teach intermediate throwers the basics of this technique in one 3-hour session, and you will have the additional option to get your final pot bisque fired with me.
I have been teaching for a few years now, and have been teaching beginners, intermediates, privates and larger groups, in places like Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, the Clay Garden in Hammersmith, and the Masbro Community Centre.
My background is in film and TV, I was an illustrator, animator, compositor for VFX and matte painter. My conversion to ceramics came after I became a mother, and fits my busy life much better. My discovery of teaching has been one of the most interesting experiences so far, and I’ve been delighted to find myself a passionate and happy teacher.
I can’t wait to teach you my tricks in throwing on the wheel, and how to throw larger pieces without having to start with an easy amount of clay!
