Metal Casting Workshop
Join us for a dynamic three-day Metal Casting Workshop in our Birmingham-based studio, where you’ll bring your sculptures to life through the transformative process of bronze casting! This workshop is part 3 of a 4-part series, guiding you step-by-step from sculpting to the final polishing of your bronze masterpiece.
When: Monday to Wednesday
Duration: 9:00AM – 4:00PM each day
Throughout these three consecutive days, you will gain hands-on experience in the art of metal casting. Here’s what you can expect:
Day 1: Foundry Day
Kick off your workshop with an immersive day in the foundry! You’ll learn how to effectively burn out the wax from your ceramic shell investment and understand the crucial process of pre-heating and vitrifying your investment. Discover how to operate a gas-powered furnace and smelt bronze, gaining insight into the operations of a sculpture foundry. The highlight of Day 1 will be pouring your own sculpture as you collaborate with fellow participants to burn out, preheat, smelt, and pour your hollow bronze pieces.
Day 2: Breaking Open the Shell
On the second day, dive into the exciting process of unveiling your sculpture. You’ll learn how to correctly break open your ceramic shell investment and cut off the running and rising systems, revealing your beautifully cast bronze piece. This session is all about careful handling and technique as you prepare for the finishing touches.
Day 3: Finishing Your Sculpture
Conclude your workshop by mastering the art of cleaning and finishing your bronze sculpture. You’ll learn how to use metalworking tools to clean up your piece, including the basics of Tig welding.
