  • 5/5 from Rutuja Rao, attended Jun 2026: Me and my partner had an amazing time at this wood turning workshop! I'm completely new to wood turning so didn't know what to expect, but Glyn explained things very well and let us practice before we started the main project. We were able to make bowls with guidance from the hosts, who were very supportive, accessible and easy to talk to. Me and my partner had a lot of fun and a great chat as well, I hope to book again in the future
  • 5/5 from Naomi Sutton, attended Jun 2026: The Happy Turner was fantastic! Great teacher and great experience. He was flexible with what I could do. Would HIGHLY recommend!
  • 5/5 from Mark Hodgson, attended Mar 2026: Had a great afternoon. Glyn was incredibly knowledgeable and very patient and supportive. The 3 hours just flew by. The class gave me the confidence to go and give wood turning a try myself! I'm so unbelievably chuffed with the bowl that I made (with a little help ).
  • 5/5 from Christopher Ward, attended Mar 2026: I had a great wood turning introduction course today with Glyn. He is a very knowledgeable man, with a pleasant, reassuring manner. He demonstrated all the required tasks stage by stage, ensuring felt confident to follow his lead. I am really pleased with my finished article, a bowl, which is now on display in my home. Chris.
  • 5/5 from Joanne Wood, attended Feb 2026: What a fantastic experience - this was a Christmas gift for my dad (74) and sons (20 and 10) and I couldn't have chosen a better activity with better teachers. The workshop is in a beautiful location and is so well set up with individual lathes and equipment for everyone. Nothing is too much trouble, they explain really clearly and are happy to keep going over stuff or demonstrating things. Glyn and Sue are down to earth and super passionate and skilled. They are great teachers, particularly with my youngest who is AuDHD, they were just so chilled with him, and adapted their teaching easily to suit him. He was relaxed and able to take everything in and it was a joy to watch. Unusually he didn't need my support as he was so comfortable. I honestly cannot believe we came away with such professional looking items - I didn't expect that at all and everyone was super chuffed. I hadn't booked on for myself, as I expected to need to support my son, but Glynn insisted on helping me to have a go myself , it was fab. It is the best money I have spent in a long time, we have memories to treasure as well as lovely things we made, hopefully we will be able to go agaon.
  • 5/5 from Catherine Clayton, attended Jan 2026: I came back for a second lesson because I enjoyed the first one so much. The new studio is great with loads of room to get around all the equipment. I can’t thank the Happy Turner enough for his patient tuition and for fixing all my mistakes - I’ve come away with a piece I will treasure.
  • 5/5 from Terrae Lawrence-Tulloch, attended Jan 2026: I purchased this three-hour class as a birthday gift for my partner and we had an absolutely fantastic time. The hosts were incredibly welcoming and friendly, making us feel completely at ease from the moment we arrived. Everything was clearly explained—from the different machines and tools to their purpose and how to use them safely. They were always on hand to offer help and guidance, and it was clear they have a wealth of knowledge and a genuine passion for woodturning. We were given a choice of wood for our bowls and left with two beautiful, polished pieces that we’ll treasure forever. Thank you for such a valuable experience and for introducing us to a new-found interest. We’d love to come back and make something again and would absolutely recommend this class— it was worth every penny.
  • 5/5 from Hannah Melia, attended Dec 2025: We enjoyed this as a family. The tutors were really helpful and we came home with lovely wooden objects.
  • 5/5 from Catherine Clayton, attended Dec 2025: The Happy Turner is amazing…..he shared his skills brilliantly and is such an incredible craftsman! I made a bowl that I absolutely love- thank you for a great lesson ️

Welcome to The Happy Turner's Craft Lessons page.
Organizing wood turning lessons on behalf of The Happy Turner (HD7) who is based in Yorkshire and who turns beautiful wooden items of all sorts.
The Happy Turner has been turning since 2014. He started teaching as part of two local woodturning groups, and now teaches privately and small groups in his workshop in Huddersfield as well as out of some of the venues he sells his items out of.
The process of turning your item is as joyful a process as the item you will turn, seeing the piece of wood melt away and reveal a final product under your hands is a feeling we hope you will enjoy as much as we do. As well as gaining an introduction to wood, the wood turning equipment and experiencing the process itself, after a wood turning lesson with the Happy Turner you will come away with something you have made, every item will be yours and will be totally unique. The finish of each and every item he turns is of the utmost importance to The Happy Turner - wood is a tactile material and he believes his work should feel as good as it looks, so this will also be included in any lesson. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Caring for your item: To keep your turned item looking as great as it does on the day you turned it please try and keep it out of direct sunlight and treat it to a good quality wood oil or polish now and again. Sometimes, depending on the conditions they are kept in, wooden items may warp or crack, this will often add to the character. Unfortunately he can't be held responsible for changes that may occur in your item after you have it at home, but following the above advice should ensure you have a piece you can treasure for years to come. However, in extreme cases please get in touch and we can chat.
