  • 5/5 from Rachel Hook, attended Sep 2026: I really enjoyed the class - Gillian was very helpful and explained the crochet basics so I was able to follow her instructions. Thank you for getting me started on my new hobby!
  • 5/5 from Susan Brown, attended Sep 2026: Gillian who was my teacher was very patient and explained the technique to me in a simple manner. The atmosphere was OK but customers were able to walk around the area, which was not ideal. I have learnt the basics which I need to practice, but I did not achieve the Granny Square as advertised. Gillian did show me a Granny Square and explained the stitches used. This is a project I hope to achieve soon.
  • 5/5 from Kate Tiltman, attended Feb 2026: The teacher was excellent and very patient. I can’t say any more I’m agraid
  • 5/5 from Janet Cameron, attended Nov 2025: Excellent workshop. Have learnt the basics so will go forward to greater success. Gillian excellent teacher very patient and knowledgeable
  • 5/5 from Heulwyn Roberts, attended Nov 2025: I recently attended the beginners crochet class at Hobbycraft in Chester and absolutely loved it! The teacher was so helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable, making everyone feel comfortable from the start. She explained each step clearly, demonstrated the stitches at a good pace, and was always happy to go over things again if anyone got stuck. The class size was small enough that we each got some individual attention, which really helped build confidence. All the materials were provided, and we got to take home our practice yarn and hook to keep practising afterwards — a lovely touch! It was a relaxed and enjoyable session, perfect for anyone who’s completely new to crochet or wants to refresh the basics. I left feeling inspired and ready to start my first proper project. Highly recommend this class for beginners looking for a friendly introduction to crochet!
  • 5/5 from Liz Mann, attended Nov 2025: Gillian, our teacher, was very patient. She obviously has a passion for crochet and was enthusiastic about passing on her skills to a complete novice.
  • 4/5 from Charlotte Melling, attended Nov 2025: The beginners crochet course was really enjoyable and there’s no substitute for hands on learning. The Teacher Gillian explained things really clearly and was patient when I made mistakes. I continued at home that evening & made a granny square. I would say however the space for the workshop was a bit like a storeroom/garage and it didn’t feel like a welcoming space. It might be nice to have some items related to the workshops on display to help inspire discussion & creativity. I would like to try a workshop again but I would go to a different Hobbycraft and check out the space first, but if it’s another jigsaw storeroom I’ll pass.
  • 5/5 from Jane Slater, attended Aug 2025: My daughter and I really enjoyed the workshop. We are total novices, and this was the perfect beginners class. The teacher was very patient. We learnt how to 'cast on', make a chain and do double and treble stitches. We were also shown how to increase and decrease and change colours - but that was a bit much for us to take in! You leave with your crocheted 'work in progress' your hook, two balls of wool and some printed instructions. Its harder than it looks, but I'm sure we'll get there, we just need to practice, practice, practice!
  • 5/5 from Julie Dean, attended Aug 2025: Gillian was absolutely amazing, very patient and made sure you understood what you was learning
  • 5/5 from Mabli Anthonisz, attended Jun 2025: I've never crocheted before, so I booked this class to learn the basics. Gillian was a great teacher. Taught me different ways of holding the hook and the wool for what works best for me. She also changed the hook size to suit my style. Went home and crocheted all evening!
  • 5/5 from Lindsey Fooks, attended Apr 2025: Gillian was calm and helpful, supporting my beginner attempt at crochet. I have definitely got started and now gave to practice! Thank you Gillian.

  • 5/5 from Sandra Manning, attended Nov 2024: Gillian was very patient and explained the stitches well, and took home 2 lovely balls if wool and hook to continue with at home. Great intro to crochet

  • 5/5 from Patricia Menkin, attended Nov 2024: I attended the beginners Crochet Course to regain my ability to Crochet as following a very lengthy Brain operation, it was the only thing that I couldn’t remember how to do it. The Teacher explained the process and I quickly picked up my skill that I had lost. The class was very enjoyable and an ideal number of ‘students’. The teacher was very knowledgeable and made the course enjoyable.
  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Nov 2024: Teacher was very nice and had great experience. Both me and my mum attended a private lesson and she was able to help both of us despite us needing different advice. However I wish that the Hobbycraft vouchers could be used for these classes, only ClassBento ones can be used.
  • 4/5 from Sue Blundell, attended Nov 2024: Crotcheting for beginners Person doing the class was very knowledgeable and patient with us. Wool we were given was not the best it kept splitting and hook was plastic would of preferred metal Always wanted to learn to crochet as I am a knitter. The atmosphere we created as a group was good
  • 5/5 from Kirsty Lawrence, attended Oct 2024: Excellent introduction to the world of crochet. Gillian was very helpful and patient with us as we picked up new skills.
  • 5/5 from Brittany Stevens, attended Oct 2024: Lovely lady taught us a great deal of crocheting in a short time! Would definitely recommend
  • 4/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Oct 2024: Gillian was very helpful and knowledgeable. It was a pity that there were no patterns available so that we could learn to read and follow a pattern. A most enjoyable workshop.
  • 4/5 from Sarah Batley, attended Oct 2024: The instructor was very helpful and the location was good. I would certainly recommend the teacher to others. However I felt that the wool provided was too thick for a crochet beginner and I really struggled with it and the thickness of the crochet hook. I do have a problem with flexibility in my left index finger but felt that the thickness of the wool made holding it very difficult. The wool is better suited to a chunky knit rather than thin crochet work Also, it would be good if water was available to drink - I brought my own but other group members did not and the fibres made people cough
  • 5/5 from Christine Evans, attended Sep 2024: The girls thoughly enjoyed their learning to crochet class. The teacher was very patient and helpful. Fortunatley only two pupils in class, not sure how much would have got taught if anymore in class. The price was reasonable. There where two balls of wool and a crochet hook each suplied which the girls could take home.
  • 5/5 from Linda Bleasdale, attended Aug 2024: A great class for beginners to crochet. The class was the perfect speed for me to keep up with everyone else and I'm happy to have learnt the basic stitches plus how to increase, to decrease and crochet in a circle or hexagon. Plus, we were shown some samples of different things we might be able to make in the future i.e. Christmas tree decorations, lacey mats, a jumper and a table cloth. Fantastic - I would 100% recommend this in-person class at Chester Hobbycraft. Thanks.
  • 3/5 from Gill Caslin, attended Aug 2024: 5 in a beginners class for crochet was too many, everyone went at different paces and was told instructions at different times so didn't get shown how to treble crochet or that I should have started to count my stitches.
  • 3/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Aug 2024: Gillian was very nice and pleasant manner Felt that the time given to the class is not long enough, maybe two hours instead of one & half hours. it is hard for the teacher to give each member of the class equal attention. Quaility of the wool supplied poor.
  • 5/5 from Angela Evans, attended May 2024: Christine was brilliant and so patient, I feel I now know the basics and can practice to become more proficient. Looking forward to being ready for the advanced class!
  • 4/5 from Karen Hayward, attended May 2024: Booked myself onto the beginners guide to crochet as had tried many times to learn from videos etc. Teacher Gillian was very patient, helpful and was able to assist when I needed it. There were only three of us that attended the class so Gillian was able to spend time with us individually. The area in Hobbycraft was a quiet area which was ideal. We were able to choose two balls of a certain type of wool (good quality and choice of colour) and tried different crotchet hooks. I learnt how to chain stitch, single and double crochet. I think it will take time, patience and practice for me to master the technique. The class was very good value for money. Would definitely recommend if you want to learn a new craft.
  • 5/5 from Judith Ellwood, attended Apr 2024: As an absolute beginner, this workshop was perfect. The tutor, Gillian, was excellent and catered for all abilities! A special thank you to Gillian.
  • 5/5 from Lindsey Tonks, attended Apr 2024: I went to a crochet beginners class at Hobbycraft in Chester & it was brilliant. Gillian, the lady who taught us was fabulous and was so patient and kind. There were 5 of us at the table which was great because it meant we each got plenty of time with Gillian one to one. We learnt some basic stitches, how to crochet a line and then continue. We got to choose two balls of wool & a crochet hook & given step by step guide to take home. Would absolutely recommend this to anyone wanting to learn. Brilliant and value for money too.
  • 5/5 from Jayne Mowles, attended Apr 2024: Our teacher Gillian was brilliant, really helpful. It was lovely to spend an hour and a half with four other ladies learning something new. So pleased that we got to keep the crochet hook and wool too.
  • 5/5 from Patricia, attended Apr 2024: I really enjoyed this class. Gillian our teacher was so skilled and knowledgeable, she is an excellent teacher. The class was such good fun and gave me the enthusiasm to go home and try out my new skills.
  • 5/5 from Sue Concannon, attended Mar 2024: Very enjoyable time, lovely teacher and group small enough to get some one to one tips. Really looking forward to practicing more. Would thoroughly recommend. Only downside was the hour and a half went too quickly as I was having so much fun!
  • 5/5 from Pam, attended Mar 2024: My sister booked this for me as a birthday gift. We had a great time. Gillian, our teacher was both enthusiastic and knowledgeable. She made learning the stitches easy for us to understand. We were able to choose two balls of wool and chooses from a range of hook. I’m looking forward to using these at home to practice!
  • 4/5 from Emma, attended Mar 2024: We really enjoyed the beginner’s crochet lesson in Chester. Gillian was great, very clear with her instructions and corrected us if we went wrong. She offered us the chance to use different crochet hooks to find the best fit for the individual. We chose our own colours of wool and took the wool, hook and printed instructions home. One of us was a bit of a challenge due to being left handed but we figured it out somehow. The venue was great, Midweek, nice and quiet. It was a class of five, three of the people we had never met before but they were lovely and made the experience even better. We will keep practicing our new skills and hopefully create something beautiful soon, thank you Gillian.x
  • 4/5 from Pam Jones, attended Mar 2024: Crochet class for beginners. I was amazed at how quickly we picked up the various stitches. Gillian was very patient and enthusiastic. She supported one to one when needed. Two balls of wool and a crocheting hook was supplied. There was a range of hooks to choose from, we were able to try them all and then decide which one to take home along with the balls of wool. It would be a good idea to have a follow up class to learn how to read and follow patterns. Very enjoyable.
  • 5/5 from Rebecca, attended Feb 2024: The teacher was great with us 2 brand new learners to crochet! It was great to get practice doing all the different stitches. Very good value for money, would recommend!
  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended Oct 2023: I really enjoyed the beginners crochet class. Sandra, our instructor was really pleasant, put us at our ease and so very helpful. I was an absolute beginner having tried, unsuccessfully, to teach myself from a book. I came away with a much better understanding of how to go about things and with a lot more practice, phopefully I will go on to really enjoy crochet as a hobby.
  • 4/5 from Sophie Weiss, attended Oct 2023: This was a really friendly and relaxed short class getting started with the very basics of crochet. It was really good to have hands on demonstration and feedback on how we were doing and the mistakes we were making and how to correct them. I now feel that I understand the basics of crochet and can practice and improve on my own with the materials and information provided on the course. I felt that this course is good value for money given the small group size and individual attention the instructor provided and for the course materials we used and could keep at the end of it.
  • 5/5 from Delyth Jones, attended Sep 2023: Teacher was amazing so patient very friendly and nothing was too silly a question - made both me and my daughter feel very comfortable
  • 5/5 from Karen Perkins, attended Sep 2023: Absolutely loved this session. I was a complete beginner and the session leader was great took time to ensure each one of us was at the same point at the same time. A big thumbs up for Chester hobby craft.
  • 5/5 from Emma Hayward, attended Sep 2023: Great teacher in Gillian. Feel I can make a good go of crocheting now. Preferred the metal crochet hook with the flat area rather than the round plastic crochet provided as the metal hook was much smoother to use. Issuing metal hooks is something you could improve
  • 5/5 from Sue Green, attended Aug 2023: Great workshop. Having no previous experience with crochet my teacher was friendly, patient and knowledgeable. I came away with the confidence to practice on my own. Would recommend.
  • 5/5 from Fiona Robinson, attended Aug 2023: Gillian was really knowledgeable and helpful with each person equally. My daughter is 11 and found it difficult at first but then it started to click. Would recommend
