Join this two-day wood carving course at Middleton Hall, to the east of Birmingham, and discover the art of carving wood. Over two days, you'll learn everything you need to know to get started, from understanding the functions of different chisels and the numbering system to mastering the techniques required for various cuts.
There is no previous experience required, making this workshop perfect for beginners. You'll be able to work at your own pace on a project that suits your skill level, with stage-by-stage instructions and demonstrations to support you.
What to expect:
  • Receive guidance through the process from Sculptor Geraint Lloyd.
  • Learn tips, tricks and expertise on how to get your tools shaving-sharp and advising on the best sharpening systems and brands.
  • Work outside on the lawn (under cover if necessary).
  • Enjoy fresh air and beautiful surroundings as you learn and create!
By the end of the course, you'll have a high-quality finished carving to take home, along with the confidence and knowledge to continue carving in the future.

All the tools, materials, project options, and equipment needed to create a wood carving are provided. Free tea, coffee, and biscuits are available all day.

Amerton arts studio is run by Miranda and Geraint, who met many years ago whilst undertaking traditional figurative sculpture training. Their grounding in long-established craft skills and knowledge enabled them to follow individual interests and commercial careers. Geraint has 20 years of experience in the field and specialises in prestigious public sculpture projects and architectural restoration where the highest levels of craftsmanship are required.
