Beginners Modern Upholstery Workshop

Learn the fundamentals of modern upholstery in this small-group, hands-on workshop in London. You'll be introduced to the core tools, materials and techniques of upholstery, with the focus firmly on building confidence and understanding the process from the ground up.You'll work on a simple drop-in seat, learning each stage step by step with guidance tailored to your level. As this is an introductory session, the emphasis is on learning the techniques themselves rather than racing to a fully finished piece – by the end, you'll understand how upholstery projects come together and have the know-how to keep practising on your own.This workshop also forms the second half of the full-day "Upcycle Your Own Chair" experience – if you'd rather combine painting and upholstery and finish a whole piece in one day, you can book the full-day workshop instead.It's well suited to complete beginners and to anyone hoping to build confidence before starting their own upholstery projects, particularly if you're interested in furniture restoration, interior projects or sustainable craft skills.With the group kept small, the session is shaped around your skill level and experience, and there's plenty of room to ask your teacher questions about your own future projects along the way. You'll come away with a clear understanding of how modern upholstery works – from using tools safely to knowing why each material and step matters – covering everything you need to:

• Understand the different tools used in modern upholstery
• Handle tools correctly, without damaging the wood or yourself
• Know why each tool and material suits a particular step
• Understand the materials involved in modern upholstery
• Follow the steps for upholstering a simple seat, footstool or similar using modern methods

All the tools used are simple and easy to get hold of for your own projects at home, making this a great springboard into upholstering pieces of your own.All tools and core materials are provided, and you'll work on a practice piece from the studio's collection.Please note:

• This is an introductory session, so while we'll cover plenty of ground, you may not finish the seat by the end
• This workshop doesn't include a take-home furniture item
• It's for adults aged 18 and over
• Please wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dusty or stained
• Some manual handling and light physical activity is involved
• Group size is limited to two to three participants, to keep support focused and personal
