In this workshop, you’ll get hands-on experience learning about your sewing machine: how it works, how to use it with confidence, and how to turn waste fabrics into something new and useful.
Perfect for beginners, over the four-week course I'll teach you the basics and get you straight to work on your own pieces.
You'll be working on vintage Elna sewing machines from the '70s, chosen for their charm and robustness! After the first session, you'll have the option of bringing your own sewing machine if you'd prefer to continue learning using that, but you're welcome to continue to use the Elnas.
Your first project will be a log cabin panel, a great way to practise stitching in straight lines and learning to top stitch (with no pressure - just fun!). Once complete, you’ll transform your panel into a lined tote bag, with the option to add a pocket for extra flair.
From there, you’ll move on to zipped make-up or travel pouches, experimenting with colourful zips and more recycled fabrics. Each step helps you build skills while creating practical, eco-friendly pieces to take home.
I'll be running the sessions from Something Good Workshops in Deptford - directly next to Deptford Train Station and 10 minutes from London Bridge on the train. There'll be teas, coffees, and alcoholic refreshments and bar snacks available to purchase from the bar.
What you'll get
  • Expert tuition on vintage electric sewing machines
  • Hands-on guidance throughout
  • A huge range of fabrics, all saved from waste
  • Pre-cut pieces ready to work with (takes out the fiddly bit)
  • One finished tote bag + any other pieces you complete during the 4 weeks (plenty of options available)
  • A start-to-finish experience of working with sewing machines that will leave you eager for your next project

I am a designer by trade with years of hands-on experience both behind the sewing machine and my studio workshop. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching thousands of sewists—from absolute beginners to those refining their craft. If it is made from fabric, I have probably made it or been part of the process. My journey has taken me through the worlds of film and advertising, where precision and creativity come together in every stitch.
Now, I’m excited to share this wealth of knowledge in a new way: by helping beginners take their first steps with the sewing machine. My workshops focus not only on building sewing skills but also on making with meaning—transforming waste materials into beautiful, useful creations.
Alongside sewing, I nurture a passion for tiny details through Micro Collage. These mindful workshops invite you to slow down and immerse yourself in creativity, cutting and curating miniature pictures, threads, beads, buttons, and mixed media treasures. The result is a unique framed piece—whether a memory picture or a purely imaginative design—that reflects your story.
Whether you’re here to learn the basics of sewing or to lose yourself in the meditative process of collage, I offer a welcoming space where creativity flows, hands stay busy, and minds feel refreshed.
