Enjoy a fun, hands-on day, learning about natural indigo dye and Adire.

5 hours Class size 6 to 15 guests       £85 (PayPal Pay in 3 available)

Join this Adire Indigo workshop and learn how to create beautiful, patterned cloth using ancient indigo dyeing techniques, guided by Abiola Onabule.
During this hands-on workshop, you'll explore the history of Adire, a ‘dye-resist’ cloth traditionally made by Yoruba dyers in South-Western Nigeria, and learn about natural indigo dye. You’ll be guided through setting up an indigo dye vat, and learn various Adire ‘dye resist’ techniques. This activity will teach you how to create unique patterns using a Yoruba ‘tie-and-dye’ and printmaking process with natural indigo. Indigo, derived from a plant, has been used for centuries to produce a rich, deep dye, and was once a highly prized commodity.
You’ll then have the chance to experiment with these techniques, creating your own unique textile piece to take home.
Materials/Equipment:
All materials/equipment will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring along a light-coloured natural fibre item (cotton, linen, wool, silk), such as a t-shirt or tote bag, that has sentimental value for them, or simply needs a new lease of life if they would prefer to over-dye instead.
Food & Snacks:
Some snacks and drinks will be provided, but you’re also welcome to bring your own packed lunch or snacks, as a lunch break will be included during the workshop day. There’s also a café 2 mins away if you would prefer to purchase from there.
Clothes/Protective Gear:
Wear dark/’messy’ clothes if possible and avoid light shoes if possible. It’s a fairly tidy workshop but there’s always the risk of getting indigo on your clothes so it’s best to wear things you don’t mind getting a bit messy!
Parking/Location:
Free parking is available on site. If you plan to drive and park, notify me and I can provide you with a map and directions to the parking, which is just outside the workshop space.
Exact details of the workshop location will be provided 1 day before the workshop.
What you'll get
A unique Adire textile piece to take home, that can be sewn into a cushion cover or bandana. You will also have the freedom to bring along your own personal item to over dye with indigo, if you would prefer.
Knowledge required
Beginner-friendly. Also good for an intermediary-learner.
What to bring
