Back by popular demand!Join us on a Saturday morning for a 6-week pottery wheel throwing class where you will learn the basics of throwing, including centring the clay on the wheel, throwing cylinders and bowls, and trimming the bases of your work.Designed and led by Merissa Hylton, a multidisciplinary artist and educator based in London.Week 1 | Introduction to Pottery & Wedging ClayOverview of the course, health and safety guidelines, introduction to tools and materials. Demonstration and practise of wedging clay to remove air bubbles and prepare it for wheel throwing.Week 2 | CentringLearning the importance of centring clay on the wheel to create even shapes and avoid cracks.Week 3 | ConingPractise coning clay to build height and improve strength in preparation for forming vessels.Week 4 | Creating CylindersGuidance on forming cylinders using the wheel, focusing on techniques to maintain even walls.Week 5 | Crafting BowlsInstruction on shaping clay into bowls, learning how to control the curve and thickness of the walls.Week 6 | Wheel Throwing PractisePractise various wheel throwing techniques such as pulling, stretching, and altering forms.

The Exchange is a community craft organisation in Erith, South East London. We believe in the power to create change through craft, and offer many different craft workshops and classes. We are situated in the beautiful Old Library, a Carnegie Library built in 1906 and restored in 2020. We'd love to welcome you to our textiles and ceramics spaces and teach you some valuable craft skills.
