Refine your skills and take your pottery to the next level with this 6-week intermediate throwing course in Greenwich. Designed for those who feel confident centring 1kg of clay and pulling even walls, this series of workshops offers a supportive space to tackle more ambitious projects and sophisticated techniques.
Working with larger amounts of clay, you'll focus on refining your process to achieve thinner walls and bases. Under the guidance of a knowledgeable teacher, you'll explore the rewarding challenge of creating complex forms and decorative finishes. You'll have the opportunity to learn or improve on:
  • Throwing with more clay – Scale up your work and handle larger weights with ease.
  • Closed shapes and bottles – Master the art of collaring in and creating elegant, narrow necks.
  • Lidded vessels – Learn the precision required to craft perfectly fitting lids.
  • Candlesticks – Explore architectural forms and functional design.
  • Throwing off the hump – Build efficiency by creating multiple small items from one large piece of clay.
  • Surface decoration – Add a personal touch to your work with professional finishing techniques.
Everything you need is provided, including studio white or buff stoneware clay and a full range of professional tools and glazes. The course includes the glazing and firing of up to six of your favourite pieces, and you'll even receive three hours of independent, untaught studio time to practice at your own pace. You'll leave this experience feeling inspired and empowered, taking home a collection of handmade stoneware that showcases your newfound technical mastery.
Please note:
  • This course is for intermediate students; it's recommended you complete two or three beginner courses before joining.
  • Please bring your own apron and a tea towel or small cloth to each lesson.
  • Short nails are recommended, and jewellery or watches should be removed before starting.
  • Clay can be messy, so please wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty.
  • The base of your pieces will remain unglazed (bisque) to ensure they don't stick to the kiln shelf.
  • Your finished ceramics will be ready to collect approximately six weeks after the course ends.

All the tools and materials required to learn how to throw your own pots are provided, along with expert guidance from our experienced teachers.

Our modern pottery studio in the heart of London’s Design District in Greenwich welcomes both newcomers and experienced potters, ensuring there is a blend of fresh perspectives and seasoned wisdom. Whether you want to try out the pottery wheel, make your own designs using hand building techniques or attend a pottery painting session, there is something for everyone.
Pottery Studio LDN is the second studio by founder, Maritza Masiello.
Following the opening of her first studio in nearby Lee, SE London, she was overwhelmed by the growing pottery community. As demand grew, it was clear there was a need for a second studio. Maritza wanted to find a space which could hold more pottery courses and workshops for beginners and memberships for more experienced potters, as well as a dedicated space for group pottery painting events.
The Design District offers the perfect destination for this new direction, a home for inspiring creatives, and Pottery Studio LDN is proud to be part of the community!
