5-Week Hand-Building Ceramics Course

If you've taken a pottery workshop and felt the spark, this five-week pottery course in London is designed to take you from complete beginner to confident, independent maker. You'll build real, usable knowledge – not just techniques, but how ceramics actually work – so you can keep making long after the course ends.Over five weekly sessions, you'll start with the foundations: choosing the right clay, understanding different clay bodies and firing temperatures, and discovering which glaze and firing your work needs. Then you'll move into the three essential hand-building techniques – pinching, coiling and slab building – and learn how to combine them to create your own forms. Along the way, you'll cover joining, handles, surface decoration, drying, and the practical details that separate a finished ceramic piece from something that just looks like clay.Glazing gets its own proper attention too. You'll learn how to glaze your work properly, understand what's actually happening with glaze compatibility and firing, and avoid the common mistakes – crawling, pinholes, glaze running, poorly finished surfaces – that catch out most beginners.We'll also cover the practical standards behind functional ceramics: how to make pieces that are durable, food-safe, and suitable for selling or gifting, so you know exactly what you're making and why.Rather than everyone reproducing the same five objects, you'll be encouraged to experiment and gradually develop your own ideas with guidance from your tutor. By the end, you'll understand the complete journey from a bag of clay to a finished ceramic object, with the knowledge and confidence to continue making independently. You'll finish with approximately 5–10 handmade, glazed, and fired ceramic pieces to show for it.Please note: if the 6–9pm slot doesn't work for you, do get in touch to discuss alternative times.
