There is a craft to making a pot on the wheel, and this workshop gives you the time and space to actually learn it. Over two consecutive sessions at our Hackney studio, you will work through the complete process of wheel throwing from beginning to end — centring, pulling, trimming, handling, and finishing. Not a condensed version of the process, but the real thing, done properly, with two glazed and fired pieces to take home.
DAY 1 — WHEEL THROWING
You will spend two hours at your own wheel, learning to centre the clay, open it, and draw the walls upward. Our potters will work closely with you throughout, teaching you to read the clay and develop control over the form. By the close of the session, you will have two pieces resting overnight, ready for the work that transforms a thrown form into a finished pot.
DAY 2 — TRIMMING, HANDLES & FINISHING
Returning to your leather-hard pots, you will learn to trim the foot ring on the wheel — the detail that gives a piece its proper base and balance — before pulling a handle from fresh clay and attaching it cleanly. Once the finishing touches are in place, you will select a glaze from our studio collection. We take care of the bisque firing, glaze application, and kiln firing, and contact you when your ceramics are ready for collection.

Knowledge required
Zero experience needed. This workshop starts from absolute scratch and is designed for complete beginners and those with a little experience alike. You do not need to have thrown before, taken a class before, or even touched clay before. Our potters have taught hundreds of first-timers and know how to get the best out of every student. The only requirement is that you show up ready to get your hands dirty.
What to bring
  • Clothes you genuinely don't mind ruining — clay stains are a badge of honour here
  • Long hair tied back — spinning clay and loose hair are not a good combination
  • Closed-toe shoes — the studio floor gets wet
  • A water bottle — two hours of throwing is more physical than it looks
  • A phone or camera to photograph your Day 1 pots — the before-and-after is always satisfying
  • No rings, bracelets, or jewellery on your hands or wrists — they catch in the clay and can damage your work
  • No nail extensions or long nails — these make centring the clay very difficult and may snap
  • An open mind — the more relaxed you are, the better your pots will be

FAQ

Will I definitely make a pot that survives?
Our potters do everything they can to give you the best chance of success and have an excellent track record with first-timers. That said, pottery is a natural material and very occasionally pieces crack during firing due to factors outside our control — uneven thickness, air bubbles or rapid temperature changes. If this happens we'll let you know immediately. Making a pot is part of the learning process and firing costs cannot be refunded in these cases, but we will always discuss options with you.
What happens to my pots between Day 1 and Day 2?
Your pots stay safely in our studio overnight to firm up to a leather-hard consistency — this is essential before they can be trimmed. Please do not take your pots home between sessions. We look after them carefully and they'll be exactly where you left them when you return.
Is this good for a hen or stag do?
It's one of our most popular group activities. Whether it's 4 people or 12, we can accommodate your group and make it a proper event. Email us to discuss a private booking — we can arrange drinks, flexible timing and anything else to make the day work for your group.

What's the difference between Day 1 and Day 2?
Day 1 is pure throwing — you centre, pull and shape your two pots on the wheel. By the end they need to rest overnight. Day 2 is where the craft really comes in — trimming a foot ring on a spinning wheel is a skill in itself, and pulling a handle and attaching it cleanly takes real focus. Most students say Day 2 surprises them the most.
Do I get my own wheel or do I share?
You get your own dedicated wheel for every session. No waiting, no sharing, no watching someone else have a go. From the moment you sit down, the wheel is yours.
