Join this one-on-one introduction to woodturning workshop near Huddersfield and learn the foundational skills of this rewarding craft. In this private, three-hour activity, you'll receive dedicated tuition from the Happy Turner, guiding you through every step of the process.
Woodturning is a fascinating woodworking technique where you use hand-held tools to shape a piece of wood as it spins on a lathe. You'll learn how to safely operate the machinery and use specialised gouges and scrapers to transform a simple block of wood into a beautifully smooth, symmetrical object.
The workshop is designed to build your confidence from the ground up. You'll start with a wooden spindle to practise and hone your skills. Once you're comfortable, you'll move on to create your very own finished piece to take home.
In this class, you will learn to turn a snowman. (Pictures are just an example; exact size, shape, and wood may vary. Natural colouration and imperfections will make each piece a unique decorative piece in its own right.)
You’ll leave this session with a fantastic sense of achievement and a beautiful, handcrafted item that you made yourself, ready to be displayed with pride.

There is no parking directly outside the unit due to ongoing building work on nearby buildings. It is only a 7 minute walk from the village of Slaithwaite where there is a variety of other free on road parking or a more spacious pay and display car park on New Street. Slaithwaite also has a train station running trains to locations including Huddersfield, Leeds and Manchester.

Welcome to The Happy Turner's Craft Lessons page.
Organizing wood turning lessons on behalf of The Happy Turner (HD7) who is based in Yorkshire and who turns beautiful wooden items of all sorts.
The Happy Turner has been turning since 2014. He started teaching as part of two local woodturning groups, and now teaches privately and small groups in his workshop in Huddersfield as well as out of some of the venues he sells his items out of.
The process of turning your item is as joyful a process as the item you will turn, seeing the piece of wood melt away and reveal a final product under your hands is a feeling we hope you will enjoy as much as we do. As well as gaining an introduction to wood, the wood turning equipment and experiencing the process itself, after a wood turning lesson with the Happy Turner you will come away with something you have made, every item will be yours and will be totally unique. The finish of each and every item he turns is of the utmost importance to The Happy Turner - wood is a tactile material and he believes his work should feel as good as it looks, so this will also be included in any lesson. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Caring for your item: To keep your turned item looking as great as it does on the day you turned it please try and keep it out of direct sunlight and treat it to a good quality wood oil or polish now and again. Sometimes, depending on the conditions they are kept in, wooden items may warp or crack, this will often add to the character. Unfortunately he can't be held responsible for changes that may occur in your item after you have it at home, but following the above advice should ensure you have a piece you can treasure for years to come. However, in extreme cases please get in touch and we can chat.
