In this short willow weaving workshop in London, you will learn the basic technique for weaving natural willow and create a lampshade using a former. This class is a great introduction to basket making and a good basis for attending a longer basket making session!
You don't need any experience to join. This workshop is completely beginner-friendly, and you'll be guided through the process step-by-step in a relaxed, friendly environment.
What to expect:
  • Your tutor, Monica, will guide you through the process of manipulating natural willow, grown in the UK, into a simple, useful object.
  • Get hands-on working with willow.
  • Gain an understanding of the ancient craft of basket making and how our ancestors learnt to interact with the materials around them to create objects that are still relevant today!
  • Craft and learn in a supportive, creative space.
By the end of the workshop, you'll have a broader understanding of the tradition of willow weaving, plus your completed lampshade to take home and cherish.
Good to know:
  • For Thursday Taster Classes, we offer 'Community Taster Tickets' at £5. These tickets are aimed at people who face financial barriers to taking part, particularly if you're under 25 or unwaged.
  • The True Cost ticket allows us to keep the programme going. We appreciate the support of all the local crafters out there who come to try something new and meet like-minded people.
  • Due to the high admin cost of rearranging classes, we don't offer refunds or reschedules for Thursday evening classes.

The Remakery started 10 years ago as a community space for repairing and upcycling furniture.
Since then we have developed several communal workshops for a range of eco-craft activities, and an exciting programme to link climate action with the empowerment of making with your hands.
Our practitioners have trained at London's top Arts schools, or developed their skills over years of self-discovery.
Our programme is curated by Alice Holloway; A researcher in regenerative fashion with The RCA and London Met university, and Innovate Creative Catalyst grant winning regenerative fashion designer.
The skills we share at the Remakery are proven to improve mental health, as well as change how class attendees see the world. We want everyone to feel empowered to make a difference, and we have seen how learning to make something is often in the first step towards changing something bigger.
