Weekly Chinese Brush Painting Studio - Curzon Kingston

Build a new hobby at the self-paced traditional Chinese brush painting studio in Kingston. All levels are welcome.

1.5 hours Location Kingston upon Thames Class size 1 to 8 guests   £38 - £140 (£38 for 1 session; £140 for 4 sessions usable for Curzon and Cass Art sessions)

Pick up a brush at this weekly Chinese brush painting studio, held every Wednesday from 11am to 12:30pm in the calm, light-filled Curzon Café at The Bentall Centre in Kingston upon Thames. Whether you're just starting out or already have a few paintings under your belt, you'll paint at your own pace with a teacher on hand.
There's no set theme and no rush. Paint florals, birds, animals, plants, fruits, people or landscapes in either Xieyi (寫意) or Gongbi (工筆) style, or bring along your own unfinished painting and receive guidance while you complete it. The teacher moves between painters, offering demonstrations and feedback tailored to what each person is working on, so beginners and experienced painters share the studio comfortably. Watching others' work as you paint is a lovely way to grow your own taste.
Returning week after week is how this hobby becomes something of your own. Over time, you'll build your skills, your confidence and your appreciation for the quiet beauty of this art, until you can pick up a brush and paint independently whenever the mood takes you. All materials are provided for your first four lessons, and once you're ready to buy your own, the teacher is happy to recommend a starter kit. Grab a coffee or tea from the Curzon Café bar upstairs and settle in.
Please note: This is a mixed-level studio session for adults. If you'd prefer a curated course for a full beginner's experience with people starting at the same level, please see the artist's 8 week course for Beginners or contact Jasmine directly.

FAQ

Is this studio for experienced students?
The studio suits you well. Bring your own project, and Jasmine will give you feedback and demonstrations on the specific techniques you want to develop, such as gongbi washes, xieyi brushwork or composition.
Can I bring a painting I started in another class?
Absolutely. Bring the painting, your reference image and any materials you used. Jasmine can help you plan the next steps and show you the techniques you need to finish it.
Is there a set theme or demonstration?
No. Unlike the monthly club at Cass Art, the studio has no set theme. You choose your subject and Jasmine guides each person individually. If you’re unsure what to paint, she can suggest a classic subject to suit your level.
See more FAQs
How much can I finish in one session?
That depends on your subject and style. A simple xieyi piece can often be finished in a session, while gongbi paintings usually take several sessions. That’s what the studio is designed for: you pick up where you left off each time.
How does this studio work?
Each student paint on their own piece, either assigned by the teacher or of their own choice. The teacher will rotate between students to give guidance while students practice and paint. This studio will solidify individual skills and give real improvements and mastering of skills.
Is this studio for beginners?
Yes. Beginners are very welcome. Jasmine will start you with the basic brush strokes and ink control, then guide you to progress when you regularly. If you’d like a structured introduction with beginners only, the 8-week beginner course is a great starting point.

Hi, I'm Jasmine, a Hong Kong-born artist and architect, and the founder of BrushBonheur 樂墨, meaning "the joy of ink."
I first picked up a Chinese brush as a child in Hong Kong, and it has been my quiet companion ever since: through architecture, design, and paintings and writing featured in published journals and exhibitions back home. My architect's eye shapes how I teach: composition, space, and the blend between structure and creative flow.
In my classes you'll discover the unique dance of ink, water and rice paper, and explore both styles of Chinese painting: fine, detailed gongbi (工筆) and free, expressive xieyi (寫意). We paint flowers, birds and seasonal subjects step by step, but there's no single "right" way. Be bold, enjoy the flow, and let a "mistake" become a petal.
Trained in workshop facilitation and Mental Health First Aid, I keep every session relaxed, friendly and welcoming. My approach often combines easy-to-understand structure and creative exploration, adapted to suit each student's skills and pace. Complete beginners, adults and young people are all welcome (enhanced DBS checked).
