Following a brief time at Downside School and Grenoble University, Stephen spent the majority of his career in media. This took him all over the world across a diverse range of projects. But all the time he kept coming back to the workshop to make something. In the early days, some of his projects were not up to scratch. As he often tells his pupils: “I am not necessarily better than you at this, I have just made more mistakes than you and learned not to repeat them next time".
At first, it was friends and family that asked if they could 'have a go' at beginners' woodturning, then that circle broadened and he was encouraged to offer woodturning experience days or half days. And so Bodden Cross Studio was born.
There are few greater pleasures than taking time out to create something special for yourself or a family member.

Stephen is a very knowledgeable and interesting tutor and from the outset, made me feel welcome and comfortable. Starting off with a chat and a coffee in Stephen's snug, adjacent to the workshop, we quickly went through all the preliminaries and what the course was all about.
The workshop was well set up and Stephen took time to explain all about the tools I would use, and how to use them safely. First off was some test carving using various tools on different shaped letters. All of the chisels and knives were of very good standard and extremely sharp! Stephen was constantly encouraging without being intrusive and he certainly made sure that I left with all my fingers intact.
After the test carvings it was on to my piece with my selected date. Everything was prepared ready for me and I even learned how to transfer the selected numerals onto my piece of oak.
Towards the end of the session my wife, who had come to pick me up, was invited in to see what I'd been up to! Stephen was the perfect host and I can highly recommend him and this course.
