What you'll do
Looking for an opportunity to get hands-on and make something? Set in the stunning Mendip Hills of Somerset, this fun woodworking class at the Bodden Cross Studio is the perfect place to get crafty and discover a new hobby.
Woodturning is a fascinating craft that involves using a rotating machine with hand-held tools to cut, shape and make wooden creations. During the workshop, your friendly teacher and talented woodworker, Stephen, will show you step-by-step how to create a wooden bowl using woodturning techniques.
Perfect for beginners and woodworking newbies, this fun and friendly craft class is all about trying something new and enjoying the opportunity to get creative.
At the end of this engaging wood workshop, you will have two stunning 'you-made' wooden bowls to take home and admire – you'll also be walking away with some newfound woodcraft skills and of course, a sense of accomplishment and pride!
Please note:
- We are all different and work at different speeds, but typically in half a day, you can expect to finish a small bowl for your peanuts or a small bowl and a bigger bowl in a whole day.
- Half days are either from 09.45 am to 1:00 pm or 1:45 pm to 5:00 pm (3 hours 15 minutes).
- Full days are from 09.45 am to 5.00 pm, with a break for lunch (7 hours 15 minutes).
Knowledge required

- Loan of appropriate safety gear and tools on the day.
- Timber for your first bowls (locally sourced from responsible accredited suppliers).
- Tea and coffee.
- Your small or a small bowl and a large bowl to take home.
What to bring
- Please wear clothes and footwear that you won't mind getting covered in shavings and you can be comfortable standing in all day. No open-toed sandals or flip flops, please.
- Please bring a packed lunch.

Your teacher
Following a brief time at Downside School and Grenoble University, Stephen spent the majority of his career in media. This took him all over the world across a diverse range of projects. But all the time he kept coming back to the workshop to make something. In the early days, some of his projects were not up to scratch. As he often tells his pupils: “I am not necessarily better than you at this, I have just made more mistakes than you and learned not to repeat them next time".
At first, it was friends and family that asked if they could 'have a go' at beginners' woodturning, then that circle broadened and he was encouraged to offer woodturning experience days or half days. And so Bodden Cross Studio was born.
There are few greater pleasures than taking time out to create something special for yourself or a family member.
