What you'll do
Looking for a new hobby or DIY craft to get stuck into? Come along to the beautiful Mendip Hills of Somerset and spend the day at the Bodden Cross Studio, where you will explore your creativity with wood and develop newfound carving skills.
During this hands-on craft class, you will learn from a talented woodworker how to prepare, layout and carve a Roman numeral plaque. Following this you will then begin your house sign.
Don't worry if this is your first time getting crafty with wood, this fun and friendly class is all about 'giving it a go'. Plus, you'll be supported by your teacher and woodwork expert from start to finish.
At the end of the class, you'll have a plaque to be proud of – made by your own two hands. Take it home (along with your newfound woodcarving skills) and hang it with pride!
Please note:
- In half a day you can expect to carve a Roman Numeral of a year that is significant to you (allow 30 minutes per letter). In a full day you can expect to carve the Roman numeral and begin your house sign. Not everyone will finish their sign - everyone carves at different speeds - but you will go home with the skills required to finish it in your own time and a list of the tools required to complete this task.
- Half days are either from 09.45 am to 1:00 pm or 1:45 pm to 5:00 pm. (3 hours 15 minutes)
- Full days are from 09.45 am to 5.00 pm, with a break for lunch. (7 hours 15 minutes).

What to bring
- Please wear clothes and footwear that you won't mind getting covered in shavings and you can be comfortable standing in all day. No open-toed sandals or flip flops, please.
- Please bring a packed lunch.

Your teacher
Following a brief time at Downside School and Grenoble University, Stephen spent the majority of his career in media. This took him all over the world across a diverse range of projects. But all the time he kept coming back to the workshop to make something. In the early days, some of his projects were not up to scratch. As he often tells his pupils: “I am not necessarily better than you at this, I have just made more mistakes than you and learned not to repeat them next time".
At first, it was friends and family that asked if they could 'have a go' at beginners' woodturning, then that circle broadened and he was encouraged to offer woodturning experience days or half days. And so Bodden Cross Studio was born.
There are few greater pleasures than taking time out to create something special for yourself or a family member.
