Some workshops are suitable for children, and where this is the case, a parent or legal guardian is responsible for supervising their child at all times unless the workshop is clearly stated as suitable for independent attendance. Our colleagues and instructors are there to guide the activity and support a safe environment, and if any concerns about safety or wellbeing arise during a workshop, these should be raised with a member of staff straight away.

  • 5/5 from Nikki Carson-Parker, attended Aug 2025: I came in for a refresher on a sewing machine, as I am starting to learn to quilt. I was lucky enough to have the talented Matt as a teacher, who also quilts amongst many other things. Matt made me feel very welcome and he was very patient with me, he answered all of my silly questions & and gave a lot of good advice about my sewing machine & how to care for it, as well as the number of a machine repair/maintenance guy. After spending time running through some stitches, he also kindly showed me some quilting techniques as we had some spare time. I had a fantastic time & it was worth every penny, I now have the confidence to start my new project.

  • 5/5 from Anonymised ClassBento customer, attended May 2024: Received this class as a Mother’s Day present and it was lovely that my daughter could come with me and take part. We were expecting her to just be able to watch for £5. Matt at the hobbycraft workshop was very pleasant and helpful, he gave me some advice about a fleece with a broken zip which I wanted to change to buttons. I also machine sewed in a zip between two bits of material. I have never ever done a zip before he also taught us how to do buttonholes which I had also never done by machine before. We tried out stitching in lines with different stitches and different lengths and widths of stitch. it was very informative and fun. I came out feeling proud of myself and confident about which machine I liked most. There was no pressure to buy at all, Matt was wonderful and fully willing to give us a little extra time to ask questions about the machines, prices and sales but equally confident to say go away and have a think about what features you like before committing to any machine. What else can I say except yes it was a lovely day ️
  • 5/5 from Dave, attended May 2024: Booked as an intro for me (a Dad) and daughter, to get my daughter and wife into sewing with a machine that my mum bought 15 years ago that has been lying idle. Sally was so kind, patient and informative. The perfect intro for me (a complete beginner) and I intend to do more classes. Sally made it simple, fun and imbued her enthusiasm for sewing into over an hour of tuition. Thank you so much, from Dave and Lil.
  • 5/5 from Debra Jones, attended May 2024: What a brilliant lesson on how to set up and use the sewing machine as well as doing a buttonhole and putting in a zip. So much was learned from the lovely teachers Matt and Sally. I would highly recommend you both to anyone wanting to learn more about sewing.
  • 5/5 from Alina, attended May 2024: Sally explained really well on how to use each thing for the sewing machine and I managed to fit in abit of learning to sew towards the end but we ran out of time. Really happy with the session but would liked to have had abit more learning doing it hands on so maybe extend time sessions
  • 5/5 from Peggy, attended Apr 2024: Peggy and I thought Matt was great. He had a lovely manner, gave just the right amount of help and tips without bamboozling us beginners, and was just an all round friendly and nice guy. He doesn't just deserve a pat on the back: He deserves donuts Thanks Matt so much for all your help - we're now feeling so much confident with reading a sewing pattern. Enjoy your donuts! Alice and Peggy :)
  • 5/5 from Miss Emma S Engel, attended Apr 2024: My daughter is doing GCSE textiles and wanted to learn to use a sewing machine. Not only did her knowledge and confidence grow but she's going to try to make some clothes. Thanks Kate!
  • 5/5 from Corrie Nicholson, attended Mar 2024: Thank you very useful session learning to use the sewing machine. Will be back for more classes :)
  • 5/5 from Shona Blake, attended Feb 2024: I had a sewing machine workshop with Kate. She was very helpful and informative, and I feel much more confident at starting out and making things for myself.
  • 5/5 from Robin, attended Jan 2024: My 11 year old has wanted a sewing machine and we were thrilled when Hobbycraft offered a 1-2-1 workshop. She is an absolute beginner, and Sally was amazing with her. Sally was friendly and patient, gave great practical advice, and even took the time to walk us around to give us her thoughts on different products that she’s personally found useful as an experienced sewing machine user. It was really useful to practice on the same machine she now has at home, and has given her the basics to get started. Thanks very much, Sally and Hobbycraft.
  • 5/5 from Debra Allen, attended Jan 2024: I booked the class having finally taken the plunge and treated myself to a sewing machine, I hadn’t used one since leaving school. The class was great just what I needed, Sally was calm, relaxed and easy to follow nothing was rushed her instructions were easy to understand, she demonstrated everything and made sure I was clear before continuing. She explained everything and was happily to go back if I was unsure, the pace was just right and I didn’t feel overwhelmed by facts. Sally showed me the different stitches my machine could do, explained about different needles for different materials and jobs, also about possible problems I might have and looking for causes and solutions. The hour flew by and was great I learnt so much and I was a great introduction to my machine, it’s capabilities and she gave me ideas for projects which I wouldn’t find too hard initially. She also gave me ideas to look out for on the internet from the Hobbycraft website and some troubleshooting tools and ideas. I came away feeling more confident and comfortable about exploring my sewing machine by myself. So a huge thank you to Sally at the Oxford Hobbycraft. I’ll definitely do my classes and see if anymore come up to help with future projects.
  • 5/5 from Faridah Zaman, attended Dec 2023: We had an hour with Sally this afternoon. Sally was wonderful - we were complete beginners and she was patient, answered a ton of questions about how the machines differ, and my partner got lots of hands on practice setting up the machine and trying out different stitches. Sally also talked us through the various machines they sell in store. I would highly recommend this workshop to anyone unsure about whether to take up sewing or how to choose a first sewing machine.
  • 5/5 from Lorraine Morrison, attended Oct 2023: Matt was an excellent tutor. I explained and requested my needs and all were fulfilled. Having not touched a sewing machine for 49 years ago l was a little nervous. All my nerves disappeared as Matts tutoring style was. All slow, very explanatory and most importantly made sure l could do basic r task and gave encouragement. The area to sit was fine as l was totally absorbed in the lesson so much so l bought machine and that night had no problem whatsoever ever using it, re- threading bobbins, changing needles etc. Excellent value for money and an excellent tutor. I would definitely recommend and l thoroughly enjoyed it.
  • 5/5 from Allison Arber, attended Sep 2023: Kate is an amazing teacher. As a total beginner, I was able to set up the machine and sew different types of stitches by the end of the class.
  • 5/5 from Fazana Farook, attended Aug 2023: Kate was fantastic - she knew I was a complete beginner and showed me the steps really slowly and carefully. She also explained each step so I still remember everything she said, even though it’s a few days since the workshop. I tried a few different machines and Kate helped me choose the right make/model for me. I’d highly recommend signing up for a 1-2-1 session and will look out for other classes I can take to help me develop my sewing skills. Thank you, Kate!
  • 5/5 from Rosie Rodman, attended Aug 2023: I had a one to one sewing session with Sally at the Oxford Hobbycraft, and she was amazing! I went in with no knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and now I feel confident enough to give sewing a go Definitely worth the money!
  • 5/5 from Judith Kalk, attended Jul 2023: The lesson was great. Kate was lovely. She went through the steps methodically explaining everything carefully to Betsy who despite only being 7 was able to follow perfectly. Between them they produced a bag which Betsy is very proud of. We are thrilled with the outcome. Thank you Kate, you are the best!
  • 5/5 from Hayley Pipe, attended Jul 2023: Very friendly and great advice! Gave me the confidence to get back to it and that it wasn’t beyond my reach!
  • 5/5 from Lynne Scott, attended Jul 2023: Great workshop and really enjoyed it. Kate answered all my questions about my new machine, and we tried out a few things practically, so I could get used to using a sewing machine again. Thank you!
  • 5/5 from Alan Knapman, attended Jun 2023: Really good value, excellent conscientious teacher. I would definitely recommend the workshop to any new starter.
  • 4/5 from Eaton, A., attended Jun 2023: My teacher, gave me some very useful sewing tips such as what needle and what thread to use. She also showed me how to spool a bobbin. The material I wish to sew is challenging and needs a lot of practice. Therefore I decided to persevere with my Hobbycraft Midi machine for the time being. However, I might well find in future that an upgrade to a better machine may be necessary, and I shall not hesitate to remember Hobbycraft.
  • 5/5 from Catherine Chichester, attended Apr 2023: I had a machine sewing refresher class and I had shared I wanted to work towards a making a bag for which I shared the pattern. Upon arrival Kathy had fully finished a mock up and prepared the entire lesson so well. I was blown away by her thoughtfulness and encouragement. I feel I am going to be able to do this
  • 5/5 from Lucy Weston, attended Apr 2023: Absolutely brilliant lesson with Kate. After a slightly rocky start, Kate took my 9 year old daughter through all the basics of how to use a sewing machine and did a fantastic job of encouraging her and building her confidence. She’s now busy making a cushion at home as I type! Highly recommend.
  • 4/5 from Julie Thomsett, attended Apr 2023: When I went to the class, it was very good. I learned a lot of new things and I got some fabric the day after I made a pillow.
  • 5/5 from Susan Costar, attended Mar 2023: I arrived very nervous and left feeling confident. Kate was able to answer all the things that were stopping me from progressing. Everything on my list, we went through step by step. There was still time for me to ask more questions and at the end Kate did a short review test of memory to be sure that I had really understood the things we covered. I thoroughly recommend this course, whether you are a beginner, or like me have not sewn for a long time. I had bought this new machine and needed to rebuild my confidence. Thank you for starting me on my next journey. Susan
  • 4/5 from Maricela Perez, attended Mar 2023: Sally was very helpful, give some guidance and advice for new sewing users, my daughter and I really enjoyed the experience.
  • 5/5 from Clare Harris, attended Feb 2023: Kate helped my 9 year old get to grips with her new sewing machine. She was encouraging, patient, positive and helped her independently master skill on her machine. Kate is particularly skilled at helping children learn (and parents to have the confidence to step back!). Worth every penny. We’ll be back for another lesson after some practice. Thanks Kate.
  • 5/5 from Liz Alvarez, attended Nov 2022: My experience was great. Kate taught what I need about the sewing machine and how to start as a beginner. She was kind and patient with me. She provided the white cloth for sewing practice. After the training we chatted about the project I am planning to work on. Kate helped me carry the sewing machine to the car. Overall, the experience, the trading and Kate was brilliant.
  • 4/5 from Cheryl Johnstone, attended Sep 2022: Sally was very patient, and I came away from the workshop feeling more confident in my use of the machine.
