Understand Leather Types and Learn the Fundamentals of Correctly Using Leatherworking Tools
This is the first module of a series designed to provide thorough, professional training in leatherworking and accessory making.
Each module has been carefully designed to equip individuals with key skills for starting a career in this sector, broadening their industry knowledge, or embarking on their own journey with solid foundational skills.
During the lesson, you will learn how to proficiently handle a variety of essential hand tools and how to distinguish leather types and understand their suitability for specific projects and techniques.
You will gain insights into the technical aspects of leatherworking, including preparation, marking, cutting, gluing, reinforcing, skiving, debossing, and more.
You will receive valuable handouts, curated lists of leather and tool suppliers for ongoing reference, and create personalised samples for your own reference.
Summary of topics covered in the class:
  • Leather types, tanning, finishings, and best uses
  • Leather preparation, pattern placement, and leather marking
  • Leather cutting, beveling, and creasing
  • Leather gluing and reinforcing
  • Leather skiving

By the end of the tuition, you will have:

This tuition will require up to 7 hours to complete. We aim to provide customised and high-quality tuition services, and by limiting the class size to 6 students, we can focus on each participant’s needs.
Important to know: Depending on the number of attendees, the ability of participants and the group’s pace, the syllabus may be covered in a shorter time frame.
For example, in the case of three attendees, the programme could be covered in approximately 5 hours.

We founded The London Leather Workshop in 2012, bringing together our backgrounds in fashion, accessories and leather goods as Italian design graduates. Over the years, our passion for making grew into a South East London studio where design, prototyping, product development and craftsmanship come together. Sara leads the teaching, drawing on specialist training in fashion and bag making in Rome, Milan and Florence, while Melissa brings deep experience in sourcing, materials and studio operations.
What we love most about teaching is helping people discover that leathercraft is something they can genuinely learn and enjoy with the right guidance. Our workshops are taught in small groups in a real working studio, so students receive individual attention, learn professional techniques and leave with a finished piece they can feel proud of.
Over the past ten years, we have taught students from around the world and shared our knowledge through workshops, one-to-one training and wider community work. We love creating a space that feels welcoming, practical and inspiring, whether someone joins as a complete beginner, a curious maker or an aspiring professional.
