Work in a small studio setting

Work in a Small Studio Setting

You will make your prints in a small studio workshop at Islington Mill, designed for up to four people, with close guidance throughout.

Everything is prepared for you

Everything Is Prepared for You

Tools, ink, paper and plates are all set up before you arrive, so the session is about making rather than preparing.

Scratch your drawing into the plate

Scratch Your Drawing Into the Plate

You will transfer your image onto a small Tetrapak plate and scratch the surface by hand using drypoint tools, line by line.

Ink and wipe your plate

Ink and Wipe Your Plate

You will ink your plate by hand and wipe it back to reveal the drawing. With a bit of patience the marks will start to come back.

Print with a pasta maker press

Print with a Pasta Maker Press

You will print your plate through a pasta maker press and reveal your image on paper. This unusual final stage is what gives the workshop its character, turning a familiar tabletop object into a real printmaking press.

Leave with two original prints

Leave with Two Original Prints

You will take home two original mini-prints made from your own plate, signed and stored in a protective folder with acid-free sleeves.

Join me in my studio in Islington Mill, Salford, for a small hands-on print workshop using drypoint on recycled Tetrapak and a pasta maker press. In this carefully prepared session, you’ll make one plate and create two original mini-prints by hand using ink, Fabriano paper and a guided process from start to finish, including signing your artwork.
You’ll be taken through each stage step by step: sketching a small design, transferring it onto your plate, scratching the lines with drypoint tools, inking and wiping the surface, then rolling it through the press. No previous printmaking experience is needed.
If you’d rather not draw from scratch, a selection of simple images will be available to transfer directly onto your plate.
The process is direct and slightly unpredictable. You don’t fully see what you’ve made until it comes through the press, and no two prints come out exactly the same.
  • Make one plate and pull two original mini-prints
  • Work with drypoint on recycled Tetrapak
  • Print using a pasta maker press
  • Use prepared materials and a ready-to-work station
  • Choose from reference images if you prefer not to draw freehand
The session is kept small, with close guidance throughout. Everything is prepared before you arrive, so the two hours are spent making. You’ll leave with your plate and two original prints in a folder.
