Capture the beauty and movement of kingfishers in this focused painting course in Harrow, designed for intermediate to advanced artists. Working across a range of mediums, you’ll explore how to bring these vibrant, fast-moving birds to life through observation and expressive technique.
This course is suited to intermediate and advanced artists who already have some experience and are looking to develop their skills further across different mediums.
What to expect:
  • Work with a variety of mediums including drawing, watercolour, acrylic, oil, or mixed media.
  • Study the form, colour, and movement of kingfishers.
  • Learn how to capture birds in motion, including flight and diving poses.
  • Use reference images to explore different angles and compositions.
  • Develop techniques to express feather detail, light, and dynamic movement.
  • Receive guidance to refine your observational and painting skills.
By the end of the course, you’ll have developed a deeper understanding of painting wildlife in motion and created expressive kingfisher studies that capture their striking beauty and energy.

Choose your medium:
Acrylics
  • A3 cold-pressed watercolour paper (300 gsm)
  • Starter paint pack (Daler Rowney/Winsor & Newton)
  • Various bristle brushes (including fan brush)
  • 2B pencil, eraser, palette, and spray bottle
  • Two water containers, natural sponge, and large cotton rag
Watercolours
  • A3 watercolour paper (300 gsm)
  • Quality paint set (Winsor & Newton/Daler Rowney)
  • Nylon brushes (including fan brush)
  • Graded pencils, putty eraser, masking fluid, and palette
  • Two water containers, natural sponge, and cotton rag
Oils
  • Essential colours (White, Yellows, Blues, Reds, Greens, Umber)
  • Canvas boards (minimum 16" x 12")
  • Odourless solvent (Sansodor) and Liquin gel
  • Bristle brushes, palette, 6B+ pencil, and newspaper
  • Plastic bag for used rags (Required for Health & Safety)
Mixed Media
  • Pencils, felt-tips, soft/oil pastels, and coloured tissue paper
  • Bubble wrap, found objects, sponges, and rollers
  • Brushes, solvent, scissors, and heavy paper/canvas
  • Please also bring multiple pictures of your subject and background. Try to include various angles, distances, and lighting conditions, including close-ups.
Session repeats

This class series runs over 9 consecutive sessions, at the same time every week.

dennis is an artist and lecturer in art with a BA and MA in fine art, printmaking and photography. He has had artwork commissioned, published and sold by WH Smith, Athena, Pictura Graphica, Boots, Paperchase, John Lewis, Tearfund, The Booksellers Association, Marks and Spencer, Oxfam, Waterstones, etc
After art college dennis worked in theatre set design, as a photographic assistant for fashion/beauty/portrait photographers, and in art and design studios. Then he qualified as a teacher and has over twenty years' experience in teaching art in colleges and universities. This includes teaching art at degree and A-level, seminars and demonstrations of both art and photography at The Business Design Centre, London and National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.
dennis specialises in life drawing, photographic work including photographic shoots with models and ballerinas, landscapes, seascapes, animals, birds and flowers, in figurative, impressionistic and abstract styles, plus all aspects of calligraphy and illumination.
Prior to going to art college, whilst still at school, dennis worked in his evenings and weekends in the studio of his father who was an artist /musician /composer. Here he helped him with portrait and landscape painting, printmaking, ceramics, photography, music - an enriching, inspiring and invaluable introduction to the creative arts.
