Looking for something genuinely special to do with your child during the school holidays? Join us for a hands-on West African cookery class timed to mark International Jollof Day — the most hotly contested food holiday on the calendar.
Designed for young cooks aged 8 to 17, this class is a fully participatory experience. Adults and children cook together at a shared station, working through each dish side by side from start to finish.
Whether your child is a confident home cook or has never held a spoon, our instructors will guide you both through every step with warmth and plenty of encouragement.
What you will learn
Build a smoky tomato base - Your young cook will learn how to build the signature smoky flavour that transforms the finished rice.
Master your grains - Together you will learn the perfect rice-to-liquid ratio and the steaming method that delivers perfectly cooked grains every single time.
Explore regional variations - Discover the key elements to making Nigerian jollof and why it differs from other countries.
Pick the perfect plantain - Learn how to read ripeness, control the heat and achieve that deep amber caramelisation.
What you will make
Nigerian jollof rice - Fragrant, perfectly seasoned rice with that signature red colour and crispy bottom layer.
5 spice chicken - Learn about traditional Nigerian spices and marinate your chicken in a dry rub. A vegan alternative is available.
Nigerian-style coleslaw - Cool and creamy with a gentle sharpness, perfect for cutting through the heat of everything else.
Fried plantain - Sweet and caramelised at the edges, deep amber on the outside and soft all the way through.
What you will eat
Your feast - Nigerian jollof rice with your choice of protein based on dietary requirements, Nigerian 5 -spice chicken or vegan alternative, coleslaw and fried plantain.
Your drink - Choose from Zobo (hibiscus, ginger, pineapple) or Chapman (cucumber, orange, lemon, blackcurrant). Water is provided throughout.
What you'll get
All ingredients, equipment and aprons will be provided.
Your instructor will guide you both through step-by-step demonstrations before you cook together at your own station.
You and your young cook will work side by side, recreating all four dishes together — a hands-on experience from start to finish.
Once everything is cooked, sit down and enjoy the full plate together, or pack up a box to take home if you prefer.
Every young cook leaves with a certificate to mark the occasion.
Dietary options: vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian.
Allergen notes: all ingredients are prepared in a shared kitchen where common allergens may be present. Please notify us of any dietary requirements before booking so we can ensure we can make suitable accommodations.

The Lope Ariyo Cookery School is all about West African food and the food from other cultures that share similar ingredients because of history: the Caribbean, the American South, and Afro-South America. For now, we're starting with West Africa, but we'll be expanding our class offerings soon.
Founded by Lopè Ariyo, author of Hibiscus, Observer Rising Star in Food, and Gourmand Food Award shortlistee, the school exists because these cuisines deserve recognition and proper teaching.
We opened our doors for our first class in February 2026. Yes, we're that new. In that time, we've already taught over 100 students in a fun, no-pressure environment. Classes cover street food, breakfasts, jollof, soups, and stews, all taught by instructors who know these dishes properly. It doesn't matter if you've never cooked West African food before. It doesn't matter if you have. We want you at one (or more) of our classes regardless. No wahala.
