Join us for a relaxed Sip & Draw experience and explore the art of Animal Illustration in this welcoming, creative workshop hosted at The Oyster Catcher. Set in the heart of Greenwich, this beautiful riverside venue provides the perfect backdrop for a mindful, hands-on session combining drawing, nature, and gentle creativity. Drinks are available to order from the bar throughout the workshop, allowing you to settle in and enjoy the process at your own pace.
This workshop is designed for beginners and those looking to build confidence in drawing animals in a supportive, informal setting. You’ll be guided step by step through the foundations of Animal Illustration, learning how to observe and capture shape, proportion, texture, and expression. No prior drawing experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to experiment.
We’ll begin with gentle warm-up exercises, giving you time to familiarise yourself with soft pastels and green-toned art paper. You’ll explore blending techniques, layering colour, and creating depth, essential skills for successful Animal Illustration. These early exercises remove pressure and encourage play, helping you understand how pastels behave before moving into your main piece.
You’ll then be guided through illustrating a wildlife subject, such as an owl or fox, using a carefully selected reference image. The focus is on building your drawing gradually rather than striving for perfection. You’ll learn how to suggest feather or fur texture, work with light and shadow, and bring character into your artwork. This approach makes Animal Illustration feel accessible and enjoyable, even if you’ve never drawn animals before.
Once your illustration is established, you’ll be introduced to a small selection of pressed leaves and botanicals. These are used sparingly, as subtle accents to complement your drawing rather than overwhelm it. You’ll learn how to place them thoughtfully so they enhance the composition and connect your artwork back to the natural world, while keeping the focus firmly on Animal Illustration.
Throughout the session, there is plenty of one-to-one guidance, live demonstrations, and encouragement. The atmosphere is calm, social, and unhurried—ideal for a Sip & Draw experience. The Oyster Catcher’s relaxed setting allows you to work comfortably, enjoy a drink from the bar, and ease into creativity without pressure.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a finished nature-inspired artwork to take home—a piece that reflects your own hand and interpretation. More importantly, you’ll leave with new skills, techniques, and confidence to continue exploring Animal Illustration in your own time.
All materials are provided, including soft pastels, specialist paper, pressed botanicals, and reference images. This workshop is perfect for anyone looking for a restorative creative experience, a thoughtful gift, or a relaxed evening of art, drinks, and inspiration in Greenwich.
